On The Road Again

December 16, 2010

We pick up as the group leaves from the fight club, flush with their money and earnings.  On the way back to the Inn, the man Vahn beat steps out into the road.

"I want my share.  We both cheated, so I figure it's fair that we share the reward."

As Vahn says, "I beat you in your own game.  The money is mine.  I already beat you so try and take it!", Darksouls gets in the guy's face and tells him to get lost.  The guy takes several steps back, clearly intimidated by Darksouls but holds his ground.

Bell motions to the others that they have company and the group looks around.  There is a woman watching from an alley, a mace and scourge out and ready to be used.  A man has come up behind them from another alley, daggers out and ready.  Finally, crossbowmen have appeared on top of the buildings.

"Let's be reasonable here.  I'm just asking for half.  We put on a good show and I deserve some of that."  He glances nervously at the woman with the scourge as he says this.  Doing so, seems to give him his courage back and he stands in front of Darksouls, not backing down.

Bamarden mutters something about getting more guys to make it a fair fight.  Bell inches closer to the group, as the knife guy in the back steps out from the alley and walks a few paces forward.  As Vahn once again tells the guy he's not going to get anything, the knife guy has obviously had enough.  "Let's just take them and be done with it."

Vahn springs into action at those words.  He shifts over and open palms the woman with the scourge in the mouth and then springs over to his opponent, striking him as well.  The woman grins at the blood, bringing the mace up and flipping the scourge around casually.  She follows Vahn and swings with the mace, ready for a follow up with the scourge but Vahn moves out of the way and is missed.

The crossbowmen fire and most miss but several bolts find Bamarden.  One didn't have a good hold on his crossbow and while it fired normally, the crossbow then shattered in his hands, useless.  The knife man comes up and stands near Teldryl and Bell and attacks them both, hitting both.  Darksouls hits the pugilist as does Teldryl as she moves away from the knife thrower.  Bell doesn't seem happy with that but does what she can to hold him off.  Bamarden also moves up to hit the pugilist and Bell really wonders about the group at that second.

Vahn again slams the pugilist hard and so does does Darksouls and he goes down.  Vahn had noticed that the scourge woman had slaver's manacles and so says she can have this body if she leaves now, nudging the pugilist.  She agrees!  Vahn is taken aback but she comes forward, takes the body and drags him off.  Vahn asks where he can find her in case they have more to dispose of.  She introduces herself as Cassie and says she can be found at Sailor's End in dock ward in Baldur's Gate. The knife fighter is stunned and looks at her in disbelief but she stares him down and walks away with the pugilist in tow.

"Do you really want to keep fighting now?"

"No.  I guess we are done."  The knife fighter steps away but Bamarden attacks him and hits.  He winces and says, "that's your parting shot" as he backs away into the alley again.  Bamarden is very put out as the fight was quite unsatisfactory to him but they let them go and head back to the Inn.

When they get to the Inn, the son of the Innkeeper who is in the front when they arrive, tells them that he got their elf friends settled in their rooms just fine.  As Vahn asks if there is another way into the room, the boy looks confused and says only the window.  Bamarden says he will go that way and turns around and heads back outside.

Bell looks at Vahn.  "Not friends?"

"No."

Bell sighs and then nods, getting her weapons ready.  Darksouls takes the lead and goes up to the room to confront them.  Vahn and the rest are a bit cautious and hang back.  There are two elves calmly sitting in the room, waiting for them.

"Ah, you are Darksouls, are you not?" asks one of them.  "I have been waiting for you.  What would it take to get the sword from you?  What do you want for it?"

At that moment, Bamarden reaches the window from outside, struggling the whole way.  He barely manages to unsheath his sword without falling back down.  He holds it in one hand and says, "I got your back, Darksouls!"  And then nearly falls again as he loses his grip.  The second elf comes over and says, "That looks awkward.  Can I help you the rest of the way?"  Bamarden looks around sheepishly but sheaths his sword and then lets the elf help him into the room.

As this happens, the others file into the room as well.  The elf introduces himself to Vahn when he sees Vahn and the sword Vahn has but his name doesn't stick with Vahn at all.  "I would like that sword back.  It is my families and I would like to have it.  What would it take for you to give it to me?"

The group talks about a few things but nothing serious.  The elf interrupts and asks if they can hold the swords to see if it would let them or not.  Vahn holds out the sword by its sheath and the other elf, the one that helped Bamarden, walks up to grab it.  He hesitates when he gets there, pausing to wonder at the moment, and then reaches out and grabs the sword.

Instantly, vines start traveling up his arm and then around his neck, choking him.  One vine pushes into his chest, going after his heart.  Bamarden steps forward and grabs the sword, hoping to stop it before he dies.  Why do you wish to save this evil creature?  I have looked into his soul and know that it is dark.  He kills for money and pleasure.

"I don't know," stammers Bamarden out loud and then looks at Vahn to know if he heard it as well.  At first, Vahn pretends he hadn't heard it but eventually he tells Bamadren he heard the sword as well. Bamarden lets go, although the sword still cuts him with thorns for the touch, and then finishes killing the elf.

The other elf looks on in shock.  Even after his compatriot is dead, he can't believe what he saw.  And now the others are encouraging Darksouls to let him hold the sword.  But the elf can only stutter that he won't now.  He grabs his friend and they leave.  The group is taunting him with the sword but the elf just leaves.

After that is done, the group finally gets some rest.

The spend a day shopping and talking to their contact in town.  Vahn finds that Brielbara can make him some boots but the cost is outside what he can afford.  She then says if he is willing to deliver some thing for her to the towns along the river, and Candlekeep as well, she will consider that his payment.  Vahn agrees and she says it will take her several days to finish them so if he would be willing to go to Candlekeep in the meantime, she would appreciate it.

The others also find some items to buy and spend their gold on a few things.

They decide to head down to Candlekeep and to make some money on the way.  They take a delivery job to a Flaming Fist outpost on the road south and also hear rumors of farm communities near the Cloak Wood that are losing cattle to something and need help.  They are given two bags to deliver to the outpost and head there first.  There is a caravan heading south that they travel with for a bit but then end up breaking off to go faster on their own.  They make it to the outpost fine and hand over the bags.  The captain, Lonarth, is glad for it and hands the bags off to his people who start emptying them of supplies.  A lot of supplies.  Both bags were bags of holding and held a lot more!  Bamarden almost rushed the men to take the bags back from them but doesn't.  They try and ask if they can have the bags back by saying they will take them back and Captain Lonarth agrees but he has to fill them again.  If they come back in a few days, he will gladly let them return the bags to return to Baldur's Gate.

On the road to Candlekeep, they are confronted several times with bandits but drive them off or talk them out of fighting.  The bandits aren't bandits but obviously farmers and other workers who couldn't find work and are hungry.  (Nedd to find out what they would do.)

They get to Candlekeep and Vahn recognizes the gate keeper.  Behlus has been at the job for decades now and doesn't show any signs of slowing down.  Behlus gives the spiel about the rules of Candlekeep, including the entry fee.  Teldryl tries a bluff about giving the payment to the other gate keeper but that doesn't work as it's only Behles.  Darksouls reaches into the trunk and gets several books and hands them over.  Behlus is pleased and surprised by it and welcomes them to Candlekeep.

For Teldryl and Vahn, it's a homecoming as they spent so much time here.  They immediately go and start finding books to read on various topics and Teldryl look for someone to teach her High Netherese.  Darksouls finds many other bards here and learns several songs while Teldryl is learning the basics to High Netherese.  Bell and Bamarden, though, are bored.  Bamarden gets fed up with the people asking him what he wants or where he is going and snaps and they leave him along after that.  Bell spends a lot of time starting out to the sea.

Six days later, they are ready to leave Candlekeep and Bamarden is certainly happy for it!  They decided to hit the village on the way back to the keep.  They again meet some bandits, including some of the same ones.  (Again, need to know what happened.)  They meet with Pelgar,t he viillage elder and he says that they have been losing pigs, goats and cows to something from the woods.  They think it's spider and hope the group will help.  They have managed to scrap together 200 gp as a reward for doing this.  Apparently good help costs more as the group asks for more money but the village doesn't have it.  So, they accept and head into the woods.

The group found the tracks and identified them as dragon.  That's when they wondered if they should keep going or not.  That's when they heard the low, gravely voice to their left, saying, "That's it. Crouch down and get ready to pounce the cat at the back."  And then the dragons move enough to be seen.  Their scales are a brilliant emerald and blend in well with the trees and bushes of the Cloak Wood.

"Can't we talk about this?" asks one of them.  "Won't you leave the cattle along?"

"No.  It's ours and I want my progeny to have a good area."

The group realizes they are in for a fight and then the dragons attack.  Bell actually reacts first and throws a dagger and hits one of the dragons.  Vahn also moves and attacks a dragon.  Then the dragon comes up and attacks Bamarden.  It hits hard!  In fact, the dragons don't hit all that often, even when they both let loose with their breath weapons.  But when they do hit, they hit hard.  Darksouls uses his majestic words to keep the group fighting even after several hits and Bamarden inspires the group as well, letting them take a bit more damage than normal.  When the little one is cut down by Bamarden, the parent is NOT happy and goes into a rage, attacking Bamarden every chance he can.  Bamarden is pounded and missed, getting out of the way as much as he can!  The dragons rage blinds him to his situation and soon the group manages to cut the dragon down.  They rest and get their breath back before searching them.  They take some teeth and scales as trophies arnd are disappointed at the lack of anything else.

Bell asks fi they are going to follow the tracks back to their lair and the group thinks that is a pretty good idea.  It takes several hours and some backtracking but they find the lair.  And inside, is a lot of treasure!  They pile the coins into their containers as best they can, leaving the copper behind.  Then they take the time to figure out the magic items and distribute them around as well.  Bell is forgetting in that.

GM Notes

  • This was not a very serious session.  Again, we missed a session due to me not feeling well, and it takes a session to get back into the swing of things after that happens.  That's fine!  We had a GREAT time and were laughing pretty hard at times!
  • I'm still trying to figure out a balance between detail and staying a bit high level.  I don't think I have found something that completely works for me yet, but it's not bad.
  • I did not try to do any voices, especially for the dragons.  I think I may have tried but my voice cracked, so it didn't work.
  • I did give them a fair amount of money and items.  I try not to do so, actually, but I think getting them are a fun part of the game.  I did have a player complain about too much, so am trying to be cognizant of it but they seemed fine with what they got.
  • I actually thought that what the village said they had for money was WAY too much for them.  200 gp for them was a LOT.  But I don't know if the group would have done it for less and I also wanted to make sure what they were offering was in line with their level.  So, I went with it.
  • I am finding I am influenced by WoW and it's not a bad thing.  As I said previously, sure the village shouldn't have had that much money but this is a game that should be fun and that includes the rewards, even if it's not as "real" as I see it.  So, again, I'm more than willing to defer to the fun.
  • After the game, I finally statted up Bell so she will hopefully be a bigger help.  While she did hit in the fight against the dragon, in general I was rolling really poorly for her and she didn't help in some of the earlier fights.  Hopefully this will help.  I did this because I didn't want the NPC to be better than the PCs and hope that won't happen.
  • Unfortunately, with the holiday, we miss next week.  Hopefully we can get back to a more regular schedule after that, weather permitting.
