FR Scornubel - Session 1

And So, It Begins

October 7, 2010

This was mostly character creation.

The group has worked as mercenaries for the various trading costers in Scornubel and have been around the area, to Baldur's Gate, down to Beregost and up to Soubar.  Piracy has been bad as one ship in five is lost between Baldur's Gate and Waterdeep or to Athkatla, so taking jobs on a ship is a much more dangerous affair.  Overland is better but there are still raids by bandits or goblinoid tribes.

What we said to get the group together is that the bard, Darksouls, had heard about some ruins close by that were supposed to have gold.  He knew of the others, got the group together, and they went to the ruins.  They fought some goblins, found some gold and got back to Scornubel fine.  However, Ramarden woke up the next morning and his purse was gone, cut from his belt!

This is where we will pick up for next week.

GM Notes

  • Not much to say on the first session.  We took our time.  I tried to ask questions to get a bit more of a background but probably pushed too hard.  I will focus on the adventure for next time and go from there.
  • I like the group!  In 3E, this group wouldn't have been feasible as they didn't have the "standard" classes but the "back ups."  Under 4E rules, though, this is a very feasible group!  I'm looking forward to seeing how they work next week for the adventure!
  • I do need to bring up some options for next time, such as critical hits and miss cards and other items I have for fun.  Only if people want to use them.

I'd just like to note that I rather enjoyed being pushed for more background. I wasn't able to come up with much on the spot, though not for lack of trying. I did however end up with a chunky backstory on the drive home, thanks to your questioning. I'd not ever bothered with back-stories before, so it was a fun exercise in creativity.
