The Fey, the Undead and the Bannite

August 12, 2008

From the Journal of Orrin Derrikkross

Within the partially destroyed building, we found refuge for the night.  From just inside the doorway, I had a decent view of the village, and the destruction was something I do not want to become comfortable with.  As I looked around, I was surprised to see a Fey mage in my line of vision and barely had time to register him in my thoughts, when a bright light lashed out at me and...whoosh...I found myself outside the building and face to face with a Fey warrior.

The battle had begun, the music in my head began to beat, but I was no where near my group (who has been together long enough we should have a name, but don't).  I needed them to help round out the symphony, but as they were not at hand, I would begin alone.  I shouted to awaken Kernosh and the others as the shortsword hummed in my right hand and the dagger in my left was ready to bite.  However, the longsword the warrior pushed through me had me pinned down despite my desire to begin the dance.  My cries of pain sang out in the night and were hollow sounding with no counterpoint of balance, and no harmony.  But I would not be kept from this dance.  I vowed to myself that the sound of the Fey would soon be added, and though I could not move with the warriors steel pinning me down, I simply vanished and appeared next to the Fey mage.

A shout from the Fey warrior finally added the missing tone I was anticipating, and I was compelled to pursue the dance with him.  I left the side of the mage and let fly my dagger toward the warrior who so clearly deserved my attention.  As the dance continued I noticed more dancers on the field with the addition of beautiful Fey panthers.  As the others joined the dance, the music of the weapons and magic filled the air and put a smile on my face.  The battle was close, with no distinct advantage either way.  We didn't utilize the tacticts we had in some of the other encounters we had, but again we came out victorious.  Duncan danced with each of the Fey as well as the panthers, and ensured the outcome.  The music played, and the dance was done, and we survived to retell the story.

The next day we quickly discoverd the tracks of those we intened to follow and were off quite early.  However, we did not go far before we noticed something odd.  It was an odd shimmering that reminded Kernosh of the glamor we experienced when in the Dragonborn temple.  We dismounted to investigate. Sereck can tell the area is consecrated for Bane. It is agreed that we should try and collapse the veil. As we prepare to do just that, Cabal mentions "You know, they could be hiding inside waiting for us..."

No sooner had these words been spoken than the Bannite I had listened in on before appears.

From the poorly taken notes of Bob the spirit. He's moonlighting to pay for romance novels.

The Bannite sneers in a grin as he walks up, having listened in on our plans to drop the veil.
The tone of his voice is both mocking and dismissive.
“You have obviously found us. Has it come to a fight?”
He directs the question to Kernosh instead of the group as a whole.
Before he can answer, a large group moves out of the shimmering area so we can see them.
The bodies are obviously those of the undead.
The party moves back, away from the viel in case more creatures were to appear from the nothingness.
The Bannite laughs and looks at Sereck and Kernosh in turn.
“Afraid? I didn’t think dragonborn were so easily intimidated…”
Looking at the group, he continues his little speech as if talking to himself.
“I think it is time that all of you died, or were killed…”

The undead are an odd mix: a Vampire, shadow demon, an incubus, skeletons, and Wights.

The party doesn't faulter and immediately adjusts into a fighting position and acts.

Duncan moves up and attacks the Banite, hitting him with an AC of 23.
Orrin moves up and does a trick strike, hitting the Bannite with a massive hit into the mans neck (22pts damage) and shifts the guy one square so Cabal can get him with an area of effect spell he is building up.

“Your presence offends me Paladin, I must destroy you!”
So saying, the Banite moves closer to the Paladin, getting into position to attack him.
Cabal lines up the enemies, moves right up to them, and does a color spray attack at the group. His aim is amazing as he manages to wipe out 4 minion, a vampire and 3 zombies. Using his action point, he opens a chasm under the last 3’s feet, damaging all of them.
One of the creatures stands up and glares at Cabal, but that is all he can do.
Sereck attacks a shadow demon and manages to hit.
Two skeletons move up and attack Cabal since he was close to them, and hit him.
Kernosh moves up and attacks one of the skeletons on Cabal, shifting him out of the way.
Then he breaths lightning, taking out one skeleton minion, hitting two more.
Taking an action point, he wipes out the last minion skeleton.
Muttering a dark prayer to Bane, as an explosion of necrotic energy envelops Duncan and Sereck.
Sereck takes critical damage from the spell.
A Wight moves up and swings at Cabal but misses.
Duncan moves out and charges the Banite! He manages to hit him with a single axe, 17pts damage.
Orrin moves up and sneak attacks the Banite, but misses.
“Die Paladin” cries the shadow, as he does 2 claw attacks, hits with one doing 3 pts damage and loses a surge.
Cabal uses a dagger against the Banite, hits, and steps back out of combat.
Another Wight moves to flank Orrin, hitting twice taking 2 healing surges and 14 pts damage.
Sereck casts on pain of death, hitting the shadow demon
Kernosh gives the party 8 temp hp as he attacks a Wight.
Calling on the power of Bain, he attacks Duncan with a will attack of 19, immobilizing him and doing 17 points damage, save ends.
The Wight does a cold touch attack against Kernosh, hitting and taking another healing surge.
Duncan, held in place, throws a hand axe at the Banite, hitting him and bloodying him.
Orrin attacks a Wight, hits it for 22 pts damage, and destroys it.
The demon slashes at Sereck, but misses with both claws.
Cabal hits and slows the Banite.
Wight claws at Orrin, hits & takes 2 healing surges.
Sereck does a Righteous Smite, give 8 hp to all, and hits for 21 points damage.
Kernosh hits with hammer/anvil, allowing Orrin to attack the Wight as well, who also hits, bloodying the Wight.
Saying another prayer to Bane, lightning shoots out at Orrin and Kernosh but only hit Kernosh. But he fumbled on his attack on Orrin and suddenly all his defenses go up by 1 as the spell that was on the Banite transfers to Orrin
Duncan moves up and attacks the Banite again, hitting the quarry for 25 points with just one hit.
Demon attacks Sereck with a natural 20, hits him in the head 15 pts damage & loose a healing surge
Sereck kills the demon, finally, and moves over behind the Wight.
Banite heals himself, is still bloodied, and moves 5 feet back from Duncan. Then he spends an action point as 2 black lightning bolts shoot out at Duncan and Cabal hitting: 8 point necrotic & loses healing surge.
Duncan steps back up to the Banite and attacks, hitting twice, doing 23pts damage.
Cabal moves up and attacks.
Sereck hits the Wight as it attacks him and misses.
Black bolts move out again, hitting Kernosh and missing Duncan
Duncan attacks the Banite again, hitting both times doing 20 damage.
Orrin kills the last Wight.
Cabal tries to intimidate the Banite
In response, he drops everything he was holding and falls to his knees on the ground. Holding his black necklace, he holds it and it smashes. Suddenly, the ruins of the Bane temple appear, and the ground shakes. And far south, somewhere in the forest, there is a huge rushing sound. And, heading up in the air, from the temple with the black orb, is a black orb with purple flames around it, and it is generally heading towards the monarchy, slowly. Not sure which town.

The Banite is laughing at the response, so Cabal knocks him unconscious.
“And whose idea not to kill him was it?” asks Duncan
Cabal goes for his book and starts to look through it as Orrin search the body.
Of course, there are the obvious ruins behind us.
“Hey, it’s a Bane temple, we can desecrate it all we want!” says Kernosh
“You should gag him and break his fingers” says Sereck.
At first, Cabal stomps on his fingers, and then unsatisfied; he cuts the tendons on the mage’s hands making his fingers totally useless.
Searching, we find the book the Bane mage had, and it describes the ritual. There are enough notes in here, and although Cabal doesn’t understand it, but with enough studying it might be possible to figure out how to cancel the ritual. It could be stopped wherever it is headed.
The rest of the ruins had just mundane equipment; we gather some weapons to take to people if we find any of them.

9500 copper = 1900 each
1000 silver = 200 each
XP: 275

We decide we have to get ahead of it, but it is traveling very slowly and will take a few days to get to wherever it is going. We know it is heading at least west, so we travel generally that way as best we can. We gather some evidence of the Bane follower and such, so we can prove who the guy is.

We ride as hard as we can ride west, we see some other villages but we basically ride past them.
By late afternoon, we figure out it is heading North as well as West, heading towards Longmaple, the location we sent everyone…of course.

When the horses are as tired as we are, we have to stop and rest. It’s very freaky, because from the nights sky there is a flash of purple flame where the sphere is at lighting up the sky.
We set up guard shifts as Cabal casts a spell called “eye of alarm” to protect us.
We sleep uneventful that night.
We can also see how far the orb has moved across the sky.
Sereck and Cabal figure out what kind of ritual we need to protect against the orb.
But we will need about 20 priest working together to protect something the size of a town. It could take out at least half of a town when it goes off.
The Necrotic bomb: when it hits the ground, necrotic energy will move out in waves covering the town.
Where the heck are we t oget 20 priests?
We mount back up and continue our journey.

DMs Notes

  • I thought we would get more done than we had but as they put it, "we got about forty feet tonight."  I think we all had fun but we didn't get far.
  • The battles were fun.  Minions were the best idea ever!  Putting out all of the figures is so much fun when they don't know, for sure, which ones will disappear or not.
  • I do like the mechanics as we get into the game more.  I like how undead take healing surges away.  It's an interesting mechanic and works well.
