Decisions and Clean Up

May 5, 2016

Thomas has to decide what he wants.  Does he lose Wayfarer, something that has been part of him for as long as he can remember?  Or does he take up something he doesn't like?  He talks it over with the others and Alaznist.  Eventually, he can agree that he will give her his fealty but only in as much as Alaznist is happy to let him be with the others.  Once this is decided, Alaznist gives a very broad overview of her history and the relationship she had with the other runelords.  She knows where a few went and shares that but says the other rune lords are her concern.  While she is trying to talk to them, she needs the group to do something else.

The most pressing is that Alaznist had an apprentice that she knows is alive but is not communicating with her.  She assumes this is bad.  She asks the group to go find him and see what he is doing.  Alaznist also points out several dangers that she knows about, including giants, other apprentices of other runelords, and then some long range plans she has about getting rid of certain groups, like the Red Mantis.

While Alaznist upgrades Wayfarer, and Thomas waits like an anxious parent on that, the others study books or practice in her complex.  Alaznist then sends them back to Sandpoint, saying something has happened.  Wayfarer is now able to create a flying ship instead of an ocean going vessel, so in hours they arrive back and Sandpoint.  And most of the group were just itching to see the harbor master and tell him what he could do with his three silver docking fee.  He wasn't around.

They are quickly approached by Belor Hemlock, saying that something has happened.  An area near the tower, which is rebuilding and a different concern, collapsed and opened up a sinkhole.  Shrieks and screams come from it and already he has lost a group of guards and the guides that he asked to check it out.  The group is worried as HasKatak is no city guard.  They get a few things but then head down into the area.  A cave winds around to some slimes and oozes, which they dispatch with little problem.  More plant creatures are in another room filled with fungus and slime and are again dispatched.

The following room, though, worries Thomas.  A skeletal figure in robes slits HasKatak's throat and feeds him to a bullete, giant monitor lizard, and cat.  As they eat it, pustules and cysts appear on them but they keep eating and enjoy it!  Thomas beats a hasty retreat and the group talks about what to do.

GM Notes

  • I'm still getting up to speed on what Strands of Fate/Fate Core does but am enjoying it.  The system really does capture the spirit of a movie in terms of damage.  Without there being a major injury, most stress/wounds are shrugged off and they are good to go for the next fight.  It's good from a story telling perspective that they stop to catch their breath but then can keep going as compared to minor triage with healers after every fight.
  • This also means that I need to be MUCH better with aspects.  I have to remember that aspects are not conditions that happen every time, only if invoked/compelled for the story.
  • I am also wondering if their refresh is a bit high.  I think if the players had fewer, they would have to think about Fate points, a major point of the system, a bit more.
  • I did think that combat went well and I was happy to see that the wizard was able to dispatch large groups of enemies.  That worked well.
