A Tale of Two Teleports

April 17, 2014

The group finds themselves in a mist.  They can make out shadows of large creatures moving around and other shapes but the mist helps shrouds them all.  There are distant sounds, the crunch of branches as they are walked on, the heavy breathing of beasts, and the sound of weapons and armor.  They all sound distant, though, even though the shapes can't be more than fifty yards away.  As the group decides to move, a shape comes toward them.  A slightly hunched over elderly female.

"Well, well, dearies.  Trying to teleport into my tree was perhaps not the best idea."  The figure is leaning on a staff and has flies buzzing around her.  "Ah, Dog Tongue, so you must be the ones I sent for.  In that case, I'm glad you came.  If you survive what is about to happen, then I have information for you."

"Why not give it to us now?" shouts Verus.

"Because I would prefer not to waste my breath," comes the reply as she fades into the mist.  That's when the group notices that the shapes in the mist are closer and more substantial.  Like morning fog burning off in the sun, the mist clears and the group finds they are on a battle field and surrounded.  They barely have time to form up ranks before they are attacked.

Ogres, hill giants, dire bears and humanoids descend upon them.  A human, pulling out a bow, yells toward the large tree in the clearing that this will be a distraction and save her tree.  And then the group is attacked!

The giants move in and deliver some powerful blows.  Pratorius and Curator are hit hard and know that a few more of those and it would be it.  Pratorius decides to ride a bear but before he can do much with it, Dog Tongue cuts it down.  As the ogres and Dark Creepers close in, Verus flies up and blasts with lightning bolt and then Ricken encloses the group in a ring of fire, keeping half of the combatants out and leaving several in the fire itself.  The Dark Creepers manage to move through shadows and surround Galen, who is pushed back.  However, another lightning bolt from Verus clears many of them and Galen is able to hold off the others.  Pratorius finishes off a giant as Curator and K do the same in their area.  The human comes in attacking Dog Tongue and Dog Tongue stumbles back into the ring of fire, going down.  The human tries to attack Galen but Galen holds him off and attacks him hard, pushing him into the ring of fire and immolating him.

The rest of the attacker see the fire wall come down, the party is brushing off a few wounds, and everyone that attacked is down.  None stick around to try and attack the group.  The siege of the Maggot Tree is  broken!

They talk to the Mother of Flies, the woman who greeted them.  It turns out that the Drovenges have been quite busy with her.  Chammody's father, Sidonai, came to the Mother of Flies to make sure he had a son but she cuckolded him with a child of Mammon instead.  This is what led to Sidonai's exile and Vissendio staying in control.  However, she says that there is a way to drive a wedge between the tiefling offspring and his sister and gives them a copy of the contract Sidonai made along with some other gifts to help them in their fight.  After a few more questions back and forth, where the Mother reveals a secret hideout that the Council has been using as well as Eirtein's involvement with the council, Ricken goes to teleport them back.  K stops him and says she and Verus will be fine and teleports the two of them back to the lab.  Ricken teleports the rest.

And again messes it up.

Ricken, Pratorius, Curator, and Galen find themselves in a hot cave, lit and heated by some open lava flows.  A large red dragon lays on a pile of treasure and is also between them and the exit.  Ricken and Galen look at Pratorius and know they won't be able to sneak past the dragon.  As they look around the cave, Ricken can't help but notice the treasure of the dragon and is not only envious of it all but wants several things he has noticed!  He starts trying to figure out how he can take the treasure and get out of here.

The dragon is not amused.  The dragon sets up court and introduces himself, as well as asking for introductions.  He then demands five thousand gold from each of them in payment for their intrusion.  After some negotiating, Pratorius is sent back with a ring from the dragon that will bring him back when he gets the payment.  Pratorius soon finds out that they don't have enough in the remaining coins.  Verus had set up on alarm and appears, wondering what happened and then K and him say they will go back with him but Pratorius says no as then they won't have enough with two more.  However, before he is able to activate the ring, the teleport circle glows and Ricken finally got it right.  A blistered and reddened Galen and Ricken appear in the lab.  They say that they got away from the dragon and even managed to steal some of the treasure but are convinced the dragon will be back at some point.

They give Verus his assignment, in the contract Sindonai made.  They are going to their rooms when they hear that the Children of Westcrown again attacked the Dottari and Hellknights.  After talking to Karl some more, though, again the Children were not directly seen doing it but now half of the Hellknights armor has been destroyed, with no chance to be simply mended, and the Children are still calling to end the "occupation" by the dottari and Hellknights as well as stop the taxes being imposed that are being collected.  Pratorius tries to talk to Eccobar, who has apparently been appointed to collect back taxes, and pays him but Eccobar only reluctantly accepts the payment.  Now the group wants to talk to Arael and Janiven and find out what has been happening.  On the way to talk to them, Ricken, Galen, Pratorius and Curator are only a block away when they hear fighting.  As they go to help, they find Arael being attacked in broad daylight!

7600 xp  (I will have to confirm that amount.)

GM Notes

  • Most of the time, I like that PF doesn't have role playing built into the system but there are times when it would be interesting.  Bob rolled a 99 on the first teleport to get to the tree and then rolled a 96 to get home!  I managed to work the dragon in with some ideas I had.  I think it would be interesting, though, if there was some way for the character to be shy about wanting to use teleport now after two mishaps in the first two castings of it!  (I can think of some things I can do but there is nothing in the rules for adding something like that and then getting rid of it later.)
  • At the dragon's lair, I played the Greed Plot card on Ricken and his player played Envy on himself to really make his character want the treasure!  It worked out well!
  • I don't think the group likes Eccobar or Janiven anymore.
  • I was quite happy with how I played the Mother of Flies, mostly in dialog.  I didn't really bring that out in my summary above, though.  I did the summary as Brook was out this week and I thought about doing more but decided to keep it more succinct due to time.
  • The reveals of the Mother of Flies probably wasn't as dramatic as it could be, given last week's events.  In fact, given that the group teleported directly to the Mother, I'm almost wondering if I shouldn't have done the memory wipe that I did but I think it worked out well.  This was a lot of fun.
  • The battle was a lot of fun as well!  The module has rules on how to break the siege by how many of the attackers are killed.  The current groups managed to do it in one fight!  I don't think that's what the module intended but it was a fun fight.  A few more hits here or there might have turned things against the player characters.
