Old Friends, New Enemies

January 14, 2016

(We backed up a bit for two reasons.  They looted the giants and distributed that loot.  I also wanted to redo the fight with Liz and the others.  So, after the loot, we start at the bridge.)

Liz tells them to leave.  Grohlyn won't hear it, though, and walks onto the bridge.  She shoots with her crossbow, piercing him to Grohlyn's surprise.  The bridge is covered in ice and movement is tough, slowing the group.  Grohlyn rushes across but Kris is able to put up a wall of shadows, stopping line of sight for Lazarus and Cress.  When Sveinn and later Lazarus go through, they feel like their souls are ripped apart and are much weaker.  However, Niko, Grohlyn and Sveinn manage to take Zac down and wound Liz pretty well such that Kris pulls on the shadows and gets her group away.  That allows the group to rest a bit and find they recover from the wall as well as the fight itself.

They keep going and are getting close to where the sword is when Liz, Zac, Kris, and Kam attack again.  They are healed up and try some different tactics.  However, the group is once again willing to split up to get close to the caster and ranged attacker.  The group manages to finish them off this time.  They do notice that Liz and Kris don't want to fight but when the group doesn't heed their warning, they are still willing to fight.  They finish up and talk about retreating back to the castle to rest.  However, Cress and Lazarus can tell that the Queen is apporaching.  At least, someone with a lot of magic is, so if they want the sword, they probably need to go now.

They don't want to go now.

The group quaffed all of their healing potions and even tapped out their wand of curing.  Grohlyn and Niko are at half strength, probably Sveinn as well.  Cress isn't hurt much and Lazarus is down a bit.  Further, they know that it's a dragon and friends that guard the sword they need.  They have a bit of time, so they stay where they are to plan for the next fight.

GM Notes

  • The retcon worked well.  I figured out at the end of last time that the fight with Liz wasn't going well and came up with a better way to handle it all.  I'm glad I did.
  • They are really down on hit points.  From my perspective, this is the first time they have been worried about the next fight.  I can't usually time this or get it to work out as well as this has.  They might disagree and I wouldn't mind hearing if fights are tougher than I think more often.
  • I was bummed that we did so much combat but it was fun and I think worked out well.
