Beginnings

July 30, 2015

We set up the group as members in good standing of the Cerulean Society, the official Rogue's Guild of Korvosa.  Guildmaster Boule is hands off at their level, which is street performers and pick pockets.  They report to Gilroy, the local collector for the guild.  Under the king, the guild has flourished.  He has kept his Sable Company, the elite guard, close to the palace, and let the Korvosan Guard deal with things.  They are content to let the guild pay them off or the residents pay them for protection.  A balance was found and has been that way for the past four years, ever since the King's courting and betrothal to Ileosa.  The group is in mostly good standing with the guild.  However, Gaedren Lamm, who has his own group, doesn't like most of the other members.  No one is quite sure why.  About a year ago, though, it got worse.  He started beating new members who even looked at him funny.  Those who crossed him disappeared.  The Guild does nothing about it.  Rumor is that he has blackmail material, possibly all the way up to Boule, and is untouchable.

Due to some devastation in the area, Korvosa is seeing a lot of refugees arrive.  However, these are poor, downtrodden refugees, but people who were warned and managed to leave with many of their possessions.  They are renting or buying as is available and Korvosa has swelled in the past few months.  More are arriving soon and the King has declared a festival in their honor.  The Guild has been tasked with entertainment and are parceling out the assignments.  The PCs, have a combination of juggling, storytelling, and tumbling act and go to get a good spot.  At least what they are used to, if not better.  They have been saving their silver and copper for just such an opportunity.  When they go to pay Gilroy for their spot, Gaedren interrupts and says they owe him money to try and drive up the price.  It works to some extent, although they are able to drop the price a little,  It is still more coin than they are willing to pay.  They arrange to pay for part now and the rest in the morning.  Gilroy agrees but puts a stiff penalty on if they are late.

As Gaedren is leaving, the groups messes with him via illusion and pick pocket, and gets his pouch.  They then leave to see what they got.  It's a big payday!  Besides over a hundred gold, he had an expensive looking amulet that is magical.  While Cress is examining it, he finds that it has the personal mark of the Queen!  He is still trying to figure that out when the magic "binds" to him and he finds the hidden weapon in it.

GM Notes

  • We finally started with a base for the PCs.
  • Gaedren doesn't like anyone and messed with whoever was next.  It was just luck that it was the PCs.
  • This was the last hour of play during character creation and worked out well.
