Ilnerik's Dragon and Friends

May 15, 2014

We are at Walcourt, standing next to the secondary building. From inside we hear someone surrender. We open the door and are faced with 8 men in leather that are very scared of us. They apparently reported to the dwarf and the magus we just killed. Praetorius tells them to get out of his house and they run out and through the passwall.

We proceed up the stairs to the second floor and begin investigating doors on the upper level. The first two doors we look in appear to be barracks. The third door is trapped and Ricken uses mage hand to open the door and set off the trap. The room belonged to the magus and Verus goes in and stuffs his pockets with items and money. We proceed to the next set of rooms and find a secret door in the wall shared with the main building.

As Ricken walks through the secret door, runes flare up and he is hit for 150 points of fire from one side and 150 points of lightning from the other side. Luckily, Verus had cast Protection from Energy on Acid, Cold, Fire, Electricity, and Necrotic, so he didn't die. But he did burn, heh heh, through all his fire protection and electricity protection.

Ricken casts mythic-level dispel magic and brings down all the bad spells in the room. We all go in and look around. Verus finds another secret door which leads to a hallway that the main entrance to this room also leads into.

We head further down the hallway. At the end of the hallway is a door that is trapped. Ricken dispels the magic on the door, and the room beyond is very dark. Once light is cast, we see a barricade in front of us and several creatures in a room with summoning circles.

Praetorius bull rushes from the back of the line of allies, through all of us and ends in front of Verus, who was at the front. Galen then bounds into the room and is beat up by the bone devil.

Verus attempts to banish all of them, but fails to banish any of them.

Ricken removes the Reduce Person spell on Curator and he grows to large size to go toe to toe with the bone devil.

After trading some blows, one of the smaller devils goes down, Curator gets his ass handed to him, and Verus banishes the two remaining smaller devils. The tiefling fires off cone of cold, twice, with rods, only hitting Praetorius.

The bone devil is proving to be quite difficult, having only taken damage from Curator.

The tiefling fires off another pair of cones of cold, but when Ricken absorbs one of them, he becomes afraid and runs.

Verus steps into the room and casts Disintegrate and hits the bone devil for a bit.

Curator steps up to it and deals the killing blow, and it explodes into bone shards that hit everybody.

The angel that Ricken summoned is noticed to be acting strangely. It seems to try to warn about something and then immediately becomes zombie-like obedient. When Ricken tries to force it to explain the problem it seems to have a light growing in it. For fear of it being hurt, he immediately dismisses it.

When it goes away, it leaves behind a cloud of energy that surges into Verus, Galen, Ricken, and Praetorius. (1 new mythic tier)

We go through the door the tiefling fled through. There is a set of stairs that go down around 100 ft. They are covered in dust and don't appear to have been used any time in the near past.

We hear a soft singing voice drift up from below, "There was a group of adventurers...who came to kill a vampire...." Ricken suggests that Verus gets the artifact out, which he does. As soon as he does, K starts acting very strange, just staring at the artifact and shaking. Worried, Verus tells her to go home. He repeats himself several times, but she doesn't respond at all until he puts the artifact away. She then teleports away.

Ricken orders Curator to fly down the center of the stairs with plans to teleport the group to him when he reaches the bottom. However, after about forty feet, the passage opens into a very large cavern with a body of water. In the middle of the water, is a large black dragon. Curator also sees the tiefling off to one side, a bunch of vampires, and a red haired undead chick.

After about a minute of us talking about our strategy, the dragon warns the vampires, the tiefling, and the red haired undead chick to go further down the cave because we were planning something.

When Curator reaches the bottom, the dragon detects him. He breaths acid at Curator. Then Ricken notices that the liquid may not be water. The dragon is actually on rocks. With that information Verus casts overland flight on all of us and then Ricken teleports us down to the dragon.

Upon arrival, Ricken's spell allows Galen and Praetorius the opportunity to take a quick attack.

An interesting magical effect apparently broadcasts the entire battle into the sky of Westcrown.

The dragon shows himself to be rather proficient at doling out damage as the others come back in from the cave in the back. Meanwhile, there is still music coming from further down the cave.

Verus flies up a bit higher and uses the sunburst ability on the eagle artifact to get rid of all but one vampire and do pretty good damage to the dragon and the red haired undead chick.

Ricken follows that up with a mythic fireball which takes out the remaining vampire, does some damage to the dragon and the red haired chick, and sets the dragon on fire.

Praetorius, with his chain whip, lashes out over and over at the dragon, bloodying him.

Curator finishes the dragon with massive damage. As it dies, it explodes in a shower of acid, which failed to hit Ricken and Verus who were both high enough in the air to be out of range.

Galen moves up to the redhead and attacks her. She starts casting a spell. Even though Galen was there to attack her, she gets the spell off and all spell effects in 100ft are gone. Unfortunately, Ricken and Verus were 60 ft in the air when there ability to fly disappeared. They fell and got hurt.

Ricken stands up and summons a storm giant to send after the tiefling, who ran down the cave. Verus runs over to Praetorius who is very close to death and gives him 3 potions of cure moderate wounds.

We follow up the next round with recasting buffs and healing Praetorius while Ricken's storm giant fights the bad guys around the corner.

The bad guys cast an acid cloud on the storm giant. The rest of the party moves up to the edge of the cloud as Curator flies through it to dive bomb a huge six armed beast, a calikang, that the storm giant was fighting.

The calikang opens its mouth and screams.

Praetorius runs through the cloud to be within threat range of the calikang, and hits it.

Verus walks up and casts Communal Protection from Sonic after Galen casts Communal Protection from Acid.

Ricken steps up and dispels the acid cloud which opens the way for Galen to try to run up and past the calikang. It unfortunately stops him as he tries to get past.

Verus steps up and casts a mythic chain lightning, which unfortunately healed the calikang for 150pts and dealt over half that to the tiefling.

Praetorius, with his chain whip, attacks the calikang with a vengence, effectively undoing the healing that Verus did to it and killing it.

Ricken steps into the hallway for a straight shot at Ilnerik and the tiefling. He then launches a mythic fireball and kills the tiefling.

Curator charges, which triggers Galen to charge, and the coordinated charge hits Ilnerik pretty well.

Verus attempts to hit him with a disintegrate but misses. Praetorius steps up and wollups him and takes him out. He turns to mist and goes under the door on the side wall.

GM Notes

  • I got some great feedback.  I was told that I did meta the bad guys and that was correct.  I handled that poorly.  I need to work on that.  And I'm very glad I was called on it.  I also got asked if they should keep reminding about abilities, like Spell Resistance, and if it was okay.  Yes!  Absolutely!  That's exactly what I want them to do.  Very happy to get this feedback.
  • It didn't feel like we did much because of it being mostly fights.  It sounds like the fights were tense, though, with them coming up with ways to make it work!
  • Three out of four players are happy that the party has the Staff of the Magi.
  • I'm hoping that the finale I have planned isn't too blase after some of these other fights.
  • I'm seeing it be true that with planning, wizards are very good at what they do.  The protections in place on the group, in terms of damage types, obviously made a huge difference!  And I think it was a lot of fun for the wizards to know that the protections were helping.
  • At the same time, it was also shown how being a wizard can be unfun.  A player casts a spell that could easily end the fight.  Then they have to roll to get past SR.  Then a ranged touch attack.  And then the target gets a save, at a level where saves are quite good for the bad guys.  Too many places where the fun can stop if it doesn't work out.
  • The other bad point is fighting new monsters where they can't know about them.  The calikang was all but defeated but it was hit by a spell that allowed it to heal.  Again, a real hit to the caster's morale when that happens.
  • The idea of the fight being played out as an illusion about the town worked out really well and was really cool in my mind.
