The Devildrome

February 27, 2014

Rance Lucca stops by the Judges and asks to put up fliers to the Devildrome, where they have staged fights with conjured creatures. He's asking us to distribute the fliers to get business. He's also talking about getting us to enter the competition as a summoner (Ricken) and Verus to buff.

We agree to buy 50 advanced tickets for 6sp 5cp each, 32 gp 5sp. Sell them all and the next week we buy 75 for 45 gp. We sell all of them for 2sp each. The second Sunday we schedule for Praetorius to fight a conjured devil.

The Sunday arrives and many nobles show up, including Praetorius' uncle and father to act as witness. It appears that many other hellknights are also in attendance.

The devil is summoned and both sides begin casting the buffs on their target.

As Praetorius heads across the arena, the devil casts mirror image and creates an additional 8 images. He then teleports behind Praetorius and attacks with 5 attacks. Praetorius randomly lashes out and kills a false image. Then Verus sends him a message to close his eyes. Using his blind fighting skills, Paetorius closes his eyes and lashes out, eventually banishing the devil.

Thrax, the standing champion and the summoner of the devil, is not happy about this. Thrax's partner is a very high ranking priestess of the church of Asmodeus and disappears quickly after the fight. It seems that Thrax works alone most of the time, but he was pressured into taking on her as a partner when it was discovered that Praetorius was fighting. He was also casting from scrolls.

That night, Praetorius is taken away in secret to be initiated into the hellknights. As part of his ritual he is given +2 Hellnight armor.

Afterwards, when looking at the Chelish Crux, Verus realizes that it's a obscure dialect of Infernal. It says "Aroused Molds".  Anagram for "Add more souls."

The next few weeks shows press gangs showing up, grabbing people who owe money to sign up for a revival of murder plays.

Praetorius gets involved and begins demanding to see proper court documents.

Durotas Arik Tuornos is in charge of the Run Dottari in our area of the city. They don't seem to have made any gestures in reference to the Children of Westros. The impression of the Run Dottari is that 45 of them are locals of the area and are trying to do what they can, but they are policing over 14000 people.

Eccobar Drumanis is a political figure that wanted Arik's posting. Arik warns Praetorius that before he offers help to Arik, he needs to know that if any of us break the law, Eccobar may try to use it to take over Arik's position. He also says that a contingent of 150 of the Order of the Rack wants to put up shop here. Praetorius suggests that may be a bad idea based on the political manuevering of the Order of the Rack.

Praetorius is deputized by Arik. Arik tells Verus that he needs 100k gp to get his numbers up to 300 for a year. In a population of 14,000, you probably have 5000 tax payers. A copper a day from those 5000 may get 7 guards.

We also talk about allowing volunteers to run a business that would generate the revenue necessary to hire the guards. The voluteers' time becomes their tax.

He changes the subject and shows us a coin that has the face of a demon on it. He says not to touch it and handles it with a glove. He says these coins are left at the scene of murders and the person who touches it is marked as the next victim.

Verus takes one of the coins to study further.

When looking at the Chelish Crux, Galen walks in after Verus has been working on it for days. He looks at it and says, "I assume you tried Lord Asmodeus." Verus slaps himself in the head and tries it. It begins to vibrate and Verus puts it on the table.

It unfolds itself into a 2ft sheet of metal and wood. On top of it, there is a severed head, a leather portfolio, some scrolls, a silver box, and a matched pair of slender oak wands.

The head, a female with red hair, she then starts screaming. Verus calms her down a bit and asks her name. She says, "do you really think I'll just tell you my name?" She eventually calls herself Kay. Verus asks Galen to get Ricken and Praetorius.

She screams again. And continues to scream. Galen thinks that this head looks like the head of an Erinyes. Verus grabs her by the hair and lifts it into the air. Something in the area seems to be pulling at his magic. He puts her back down.

Praetorius asks her who put her there.

The leather portfolio has an embossed D, the symbol for Delvehaven, the Pathfinder's Lodge. There are some accounting papers, a letter to Mayor Dargentu Vheed. We find out that she was, as a head, gifted to Vheed when he lived in Delvehaven.

The box contains some Grave Candles that allow you to speak with the dead as long as you have their remains.

'K' says she served Molloch, until she failed him. She is a devil. She offered to serve us if we give her her body back. We would make an arrangement with us.

Ricken, Galen and Verus put their heads together and come up with a potion that should do some restoration of her mind for as much as 12 hours.

While they were doing that, Praetorius went to his father to get the contract drawn up. He is told that he managed to get 50 hellknights to report to Praetorius. He then asks for help with a contract.

We talk through the contract with K and she agrees to serve us until at least one of the judges is still alive. The contract also stipulates that she protect us.

We feed her the potion we came up with and her body returns through several portals, one piece by piece. She had evidently been dismembered. Once she is in one piece, she summons her bow and sword and puts them away. She then looks at Verus and says, "I hope you live more than 300 years given what you are." Praetorius asks what that is. She says, "That's another deal." She has a charisma 25, and is very hot.

We then ask her about Delvehaven. ..

Each area the Pathfinders existed in had a lodge. This lodge was the mainstay for Cheliax for 700 years. Whenever any chelish Pathfinders went out and got artifacts and relics in their ventures, they would bring them back to DelveHaven. She does say that the Pathfinders liked Golems as guardians.

GM Notes

  • In trying to figure out if they wanted K's help, someone asked, to the effect, "Are you qualified?"  As it was too perfect, I went into a Beetlejuice rant on that line.  My wife, who was upstairs, asked to calm down "Beetlejuice."  The thing is, she later told me she couldn't specifically hear what I was saying, just the way I was saying it!  That's funny!
  • I was really happy with how I managed to bring several PC things into the main plot of the module and work them into the ongoing plot.  I think that works out much better.  I also managed to set up some things for later.
  • Still enjoying the Campaign Coins!  Verus was not happy how much it was going to cost to upgrade the weapons, even though it was only three coins!  (Okay, they have denominations, so it was more than 3 gp or even 3 pp but still.)  I think they are working out very well.
  • I expanded the Rego Cader, or poor section (which is supposed to be ruins but I have as slums), and created how it looks on a little grid map.  I'm really happy with how that has turned out as well.  Makes it a lot more concrete for the whole group about what is out there in their neighborhood and what they are doing for it.
  • Actually, quite happy at how the group is standing up for other's rights when things are mentioned.  That will play very nicely into the plot of the adventure later.
