The Delve into Delvehaven 3

April 3, 2014

We leave Bisby's room and head down the hallway to the tavern. In the room there is a table with a collection of dolls on it. Coriana swears when she sees them. Apparently they may come to life. As we all look at these dolls, a dragon, a porcelain doll, a teddy bear, a hangman, and a witchdoctor, the porcelain doll comes to life.

The dolls scatter around the room and attack us. Praetorius flicks out his chain, wraps it around the dragon above him and slams it down to the ground, shattering it. Verus casts a lightning bolt and destroys the hangman and the witchdoctor. Galen stabs the porcelain doll. And Ricken casts a fire wall around the teddy bear, burning it.

We look around the tavern to see if there's anything interesting in here. Verus finds a secret door behind the bar. Some of the wine bottles are very old vintages and some of the wine bottles are showing wine. There are 9 potions. We fill our haversacks with 20 of vintage wine and the 9 bottles of potions.

Verus then notices one of the goblets on the shelf that controls the secret door. He opens the door. Coriana says this must be where the secret meeting rooms with the most prized artifacts are. Verus laughs and goes first. Down the hall he finds two staircases going down. At the end of the resulting hallway is the ship museum. We go in to double check that the vampire's coffin isn't in there. Praetorius and Galem go first and are effected by another haunt.

Galen and Ricken are overlaid with ghost images of Bisby and Ilnerik Sivanshin, his chronicler, who are arguing. There aren't any bad effects with it, presumably because we put Bisby to rest.

Coriana says that if this is the effect here, we probably want to avoid the insect room. We agree and leave back up the stairs and back down the other staircase. It leads to a door with a silver inlaid glyph. Coriana challenges Verus to see what he can make of this. He closes his eyes and feels for magic. He realizes there's nothing magical about it. It's just another glyph like on the front door. She realizes he figured it out and says she was going to tell him it was the room of 1000 hells if he couldn't figure it out.

In this room there are artifacts from dig sites all over. There is some magic in them but these are just archaelogical artifacts. There's another private bar, with another dozen bottles of wine with 3 being more potions. Ricken puts all of them in his haversack.

Nothing else being of interest, we head back up the stairs and go down the hallway still within the secret area. It leads to the back side of another secret door. In the next room looks like the remains of a statue is sitting on top of the teleport circle that is in this room. Verus walks up to the double doors. Iron doors emanating a little magic. Verus barely realizes it's trapped. He says it might take a bit, but Praetorius suggests using the key. Verus lets him do it, and the key works in the lock and the doors open without setting off the trap.

There is a summoning circle in the middle of the room. Bilumenescent crystals illuminate the room. Coriana tells us not to touch the red doors. She also tells us that the secret door is under the big block to the left. Praetorius's scarab tells him that a golem is within 60 ft of him.

Curator helps Praetorius and they find a tunnel leading to a set of stairs going down. After the first flight, the stairs widen out considerably. At the bottom, there's another marrowstone golem.

Praetorius passes the golem towards an area with barricades across the hallway. He spots a crouching figure. It's a vampire that looks him directly in the eyes and charms him. He says, "help me kill your friends." Praetorius replies, "Ok." He then turns around and attacks Galen.

The golem comes up and attacks Coriana, hitting her rather hard and she drops. Verus then steps up and casts lightning bolt at the golem. He fails to cast defensively and takes a punch from the golem. He then manages to get the spell off which the golem completely ignores but which hits the vampire for a little damage.

K asks Verus if she should kill Praetorius because he has obviously betrayed us. Verus says to kill the vampire because he's controlling Praetorius. She seems to be resistant, but then teleports to the vampire and attacks.

After a couple of rounds, another marrowstone golem comes walking down the hallway with a vampire following it.

Praetorius then crits Galen almost dropping him. Curator successfully attacks the golem and Ricken drops a black tentacles spell in the middle of all of it. Praetorius and two of the golems are grappled.

Verus dimension doors next to K in order to use a wand of restoration on Galen, but K grabs Galen and teleports him back to the stairs and teleports back. Praetorius comes very close to killing Verus but at the last second shakes himself free of the vampire's influence and stops attacking. Verus then reads from a scroll and casts Sunburst, totally destroying one of the vampires, but only damaging the obviously more powerful vampire. He fully expected it to kill him, but K jumped in front of him and wraps her wings around him, taking all his damage as well as hers.

Ricken, meanwhile, summons 3 hound archons to fight the golems. They tear into the golems with limited results.

The old vampire turns to gaseous form and moves back to the spot next to Ricken and casts silence in himself with a 20ft radius. Verus then casts Sanctuary on himself, taking himself out of the fight and tells K to help the others.

Ricken then uses a spell-like ability to summon 6 lantern archons which are bypassing all damage reduction abilities. They show themselves to be much more effective.

Galen turns around and critted the older vampire which turns into mist and disappears.

The remaining two golems are taken down by Ricken's lantern archons.

Verus uses a wand of restoration on Galen to restore the lost levels from the vampire attacks. Coriana then heals up the groups.

Ricken sends his archons around to scout the area. They return talking about a bright light. Verus then heads down the barricaded hallway.

The light is coming from half of the artifact that was stolen before. An eagle's head. It is giving off daylight. As we approach, it sets off a sunburst which Verus reacts to and blocks with a protection from energy barrier.

We find a rapier (Whisper Slash), mummy hand (Hand of the Pharoah), a chess set given to Cheliax, in addition to the eagle head.

Verus collects the eagle head, which then stops giving off the light. He can control it with a command word. It has abilities against undead.

Coriana reminds us that the vampires aren't all dead. We still need to hunt them down. We find them behind the staircase. Praetorius takes care of them. Vanwin was already staked with her own staked, but he then takes her stake and stakes Jair. He finds a wand of inflict moderate wounds, +1 chain shirt, +1 short sword, wayfinder, +1 leather, +1 wooden stakes * 2, +3 defending mithril rapier, the mummy hand is a luck stone, the chess set is not magical.

The eagle head appears to be the other side of a bat head artifact. It is probably the bat artifact that is causing the night time problem in the town.

We then head back to the teleport circle and use it to teleport out and back to Judged.

The potions we found with the wine is:

2 potions of Cure Moderate Wounds

2 potions of Restoration

1 potion of levitate

2 potions of Mage Armor

1 potion of Protection from Arrows

1 potion of Reduce Person

When Praetorius gets to the barracks, his leutenant, Carl, are arming up. 30 of them are getting ready to go after the Children of Westcrown. They apparently have been stirring up trouble about how the hellknights are going to extort them and oppress them and impose martial law. Praetorius tells him that they can't just go out for war. They have to launch an investigation. They have to have proof and then they can arrest the offenders, but if they just launch revenge, they will lose in the eyes of the public.

We then meet with Aylen and Coriana. She wants to be told about everything, but doesn't seem to care about the vampires and golems. She's interested in the books and art and stuff. She also shares with us that the mayor decreed that anything removed from Delvehaven and any manor house that is investigated is property of the city and is to be turned in immediately.

Ricken's parents come through the door and tell him he needs to be getting ready for his betrothel party. An argument ensues. He then refers to Curator to protect him and his parents seem proud that he can summon his Eidolon. Verus mentions that Curator is a most powerful celestial. This starts another argument about him being a celestial.

Aylen decides that she will probably get thrown out because of the decree. We discuss her involvement and decide that she needs to leave town of her own volition.

Carl comes into Judged with rusted armor and very tense. He's complaining that someone replaced their armor cleaning solution with something that caused major harm to the armor. He's furious. Verus just waves his hand and casts mending on the armor, thus fixing it. Carl immediately calms down and thanks him. He then tells us that the dotari and the Order of the Rack barracks were also hit. Verus leaves and heads to the Order of Scourge barracks to fix their armor. Then heads to the dotari.

When he gets there, Eric is very helpful until Eccobar comes in and causes all sorts of trouble with Verus. Eric asks why all of his soldiers turned in their resignations today. They all quit because the rumors of martial law in the area. They refused to enforce martial law on their own people. Verus explains that someone in the area is sowing discord and raising the emotions of everyone against authority in the area. He tells Eric to get his people back, that we are finding who is at the bottom of this and will fix it. Verus's phrasing apparently offends Eccobar as sounding like an order and demands to see Verus's papers of city official. Verus is very derisive of Eccobar's attitude and rephrases things to Eric. Eccobar threatens that if Eric goes to the Judges for help, Eccobar will take the title of Duxotar for this rego. With that, Verus angrily tells him to piss off and get out of his way as he leaves.

Verus then heads to Julian with the Order of the Rack and helps repair their armor. Julian is very thankful of his help.

Praetorius, Ricken, and Galen head to Viseo's Tavern. Ricken addresses their questions about whether the Children have anything to do with it, by acting like he congratulates Arayel for the armor polish. He's very confused about it. When Janaven arrives they use the same tactic. Sense motive shows that she's hiding something, but probably wasn't the source of the civil unrest. She probably knows something though.
