Party Crashers

November 6, 2015

Clink is still cooking, the group and Laori are relaxing when the next dragon shows up.  It's a black dragon.  Cress is worried and immediately starts asking them not to destroy the Inn.  The black dragon transforms into a Mwangi looking human, looks at Cress, and asks, "Why would we do that?"  Then proceeds inside, sniffs out Clink and starts saying hello.  Clink doesn't seems amused but is polite.  The black dragon introduces himself as Acrid and throws a lot of coin around, to get a bard playing.  Lazarus only plays one song, which gets Acrid to comment that he easily paid for weeks worth of entertainment!  Cress warns Acrid that Lazarus is a bit of a prima donna and Acrid nods to it and requests more entertainment, which Lazarus agrees.

The performance and drinking brings out many patrons, people who should be going to work, but are wondering what's happening.  Halli, who knows Clink and Acrid, shows up and starts buying drinks for people, which gets even more people.  That's when Acrid says he wants to see the wizard drunk.  Cress doesn't agree . . . until Acrid pulls out a book with a seven pointed star on it.  Cress can't down the liquid fast enough.  Seeing this, Halli chuckles and pulls out another spell book, but with only one point of the seven pointed star and shows she has another.  Cress drinks more.  Laori comes to his rescue by coming over and massaging him, covering up the slow poison spells she casts.  That allows him to drink more.  And they keep pushing it.  Even with slow poison, Cress can feel the effects of the alcohol in his system.

Clink seems to be less quiet but agrees to keep cooking and they sell a lot of food and drink.  And suddenly, the money leaves.  Clink, Halli, Acrid, and a few others suddenly say they need to go.  They all walk outside, transform and fly away.  The crowd, most of whom didn't realize those were dragons, are left speechless.  And then groans come from the crowd as many realize they will have to go to work drunk.  Everyone slowly trudges off to work.

Cress, though, is not happy with this and says they need to follow the dragons.  The group isn't sure but Cress insists.  He gets Rock to follow them, after reminding him that they would find him a morsel at best.  They all end up landing at a manor house, which the group recognizes as the Arkona mansion.  They hustle there but find guards out front.  Cress points to Lazarus and motions to his head.  Lazarus looks confused?  Cress points to his head and then to Lazarus head.  Lazarus looks confused.  Finally, Cress, exasporated, tells Lazarus to put on his helm.  The light goes off and Lazarus does so.  He manages to find out that there are two things that will get them into the compound.  The first is the password, which Lazarus gets.  The second is information on Mel.  Lazarus then talks to Cress about this, via the helm so it's silent, and they are worried as that means more rakshasa.  They get into the compound and are taken up to the manor.  Another servant answers the door and they say that they are there for the meeting.  He nods and takes them to a garden room.

The palace is quite opulent.  Thick rugs, tapestries and a lot of tiger and elephant motifs cover the surfaces.  A lot of Vudran influence.  Lazarus had heard the family got back its riches after a trip by some ancestors several hundred years ago but now wonders about several details on that.  They are shown into a garden.  At first, Lazarus thinks the sky is overhead but realizes an illusion is being projected onto the ceiling of clouds.  Besides the group of thirteen meeting, there is a large jade status of an elephant and a fountain in the room.

They are asked what they are doing here and several of the dragons they met are wondering as well.  Their host, who doesn't name himself, confronts them.  He is able to name them all and asks if they bring anything to the table.  They vaguely say they bring lots to the table.  He talks about how his family is going to rule the town and if they can bring him The Four to his side, or Devargo, then he would agree to let them join.  They are shown out a side door, leading to the outside.  Cress doesn't want to leave, though, so they muddle the guides thoughts and send him on his way.  Then they make their way around the side of the house and pick a lock to get into the house again.  However, two guardians are nearby and attack!  It's not too tough of a fight but does hurt them a bit.  Laori seems combat happy but it dies down when these things are revealed to be plants, and so don't bleed.

They get inside and start looking around.  Cress felt the power of whatever Arkona is using to control the dragons from downstairs, so they start looking for stairs down.  As they go through a room with statues, they find a secret door, the winds downstairs into a dungeon.  There is a hallway with traps and Niko is able to get past is, as is Sveinn.  Sveinn laughs and teases the others that he found the illusionary wall, which they follow into another room.  This room reveals a creature who explains that the test will begin.  A rock wall is put up behind them and they are told it will only open when they find and defeat it.  Cress figures that's where the dragon orb, or whatever they are using to control the dragons is anyway, so they keep going.

Sveinn finds and pulls a lever, which melts away the wall in a corner of the dungeon to show more rooms, including a pool.  The group avoids the pool and finds some trapped doors.  Unfortunately, Niko fails to open one door and the trap on it sets off the trap on the other door!  It about kills Cress.  Fortunately, Laori has several means to heal and uses them on the group, herself included.

Behind the doors are the guards from the outside, who are rakshasa and attack.  Again, a tough fight as the group remembers to attack with piercing weapons.  A few tough breaks but soon the group is victorious.  That's when Laori smacks her head and says, "rakshasa!  Duh!"  She then goes over to Lazarus and enchants his crossbow and bolts.  "There," she says.  "Those will now kill a rakshasa if you hit them."  Lazarus is looking quite happy at that.  They take a few items from the rakshasa then keep going.

GM Notes

  • A fun time.  I had the idea that the dragons are the kids of diplomatic dragons on a council and got that point across to the players via role playing.  Quite happy with that!
  • Having the scene at the Inn was quite fun and I think got everyone involved pretty well.
  • I didn't expect them to follow the dragons and then crash the party but went with it.  I think it turned out well.
