 The Underground Bane Temple

August 26, 2008

Quick Log:

The group spends a few days in Longmaple enchanting items and resting. They manage to avoid all the offers for jobs and dinners and keep to themselves. After much debate, the group decides to re-examine the grick area. En-route, a person is spotted, and against Kernosh's desire the party investigates. A Bane follower is found, who summons up skeletons (that we later learn were ghouls), and a flaming skull. The skeletons and skull are destroyed and the priest of Bane fumbles two attacks and is finally taken down by Cabals new flaming sphere spell. To celebrate, Cabal burns his name into a hillside with his sphere.

Investigating further, a hidden underground temple to Bane is found. Going deeper, we enter an alter room where once someone walks too far, they must leave an offering to Bane. Orrin discovers this after passing too far. Cabal throws a magic rod to Orrin but it magically moves through the air and lands on an alter, allowing him passage. Further exploration by the two find a room with a dark oil covered pool of water that shows images of abilities the two could learn if they were to enter the water. They fight the urge to enter the pool and leave, both paying money to exit. Sereck suggests looking for hidden offering cache's, that are found. But Bane's voice is heard by Cabal who runs out of the temple. It is determined it would take 15 priests to remove the taint of Bane and the spell, and that this is a temple where initiation rituals and tests are performed. The rest of the party follow Cabal out, trying to shut things up and remove evidence of their investigation. Unfortunately, one set of doors past the alter were left open, because nobody wanted to pay to go shut them.

Outside, the hidden entrance is put back in place, and then Cabal sees his name on the hillside and groans. As the party leaves, Kernosh is suddenly compelled to run back to the temple. After many powerful hits by Orrin and Cabal, Kernosh is knocked unconscious and the party leaves the area. When Kernosh wakes, the last words at the camp are:

“That’s the last time you do that” says Kernosh to Orrin and Cabal
“That’s the last time I want to do that” replies Orrin
“I didn’t mind” says Cabal

DM's Notes
  • I really liked how well the group role played this.  I thought all of them did a great job.
  • I had used a few minis and put them on the table and I think those intimidated them more than anything else I could do!
  • Again, I really like how we are ignoring politics or at least not role playing it all.  By having it at a more abstract level, it's easier and more fun for all of us, as we aren't into politics that much and I think it would be hard to do.
