Getting the Pieces

October 9, 2007

The group decides to get some fresh dragon pieces to be able to enter the Dragon's Graveyard.  Martin, Malcolm and Tabra had to research and find a dragon.  This is tough to do as there was talk of allying with some of the dragons.  However, if it gets out that they "picked" a dragon to sacrifice, would any dragon be willing to talk to them later?  They still felt it was worth the risk and so picked a yellow dragon in the stone lands and goblin marches, north of Cormyr.  Tabra created a device that would call it to the group.

The group outfitted themselves and went to the area.  They had a quick fight with hill giants that ended up being tough.  One hit almost killed Deuce!  That wasn't so different from Alternity, so maybe we had a few things right! They took the time to backtrack the giants to their lair.  It was a good thing they did!  They found that one hill giant had a bag of holding, and in it were some gloves of storing and a ring.  Reece claimed those and stored some items into each one.

They kept traveling in the desert until they figured they were far enough.  Then Reece activated the item to call the dragon.  He could sense it was a distance away and was going to take an hour to get here.  They talked about tactics and planning while they waited.  Eventually, the dragon arrived and it was another fight.  Reece's singing definitely helped Notch hit the dragon.  It was twisting and moving very fast for something so big.  His gloves helped him hurt it with each hit.  Duece and Lisha used ranged items and hit the dragon but the wounds they inflicted seemed small compared to the size of the dragon.  Julia attacked the dragon as well, hitting it but not as often as Notch.  The dragon gave as good as it got.  He hit Notch and Julia pretty hard but not enough to take them down.  Soon, it was down.

The group "harvested" a lot of parts, hoping to make several of them into weapons or armor.  Notch was checking out the hole it came in and thought he could travel in it, right back to its lair.  The group decided it was worth it and followed the tunnel back.  They did find its lair and looted what they could take.

With the needed components, the group headed back to Arabel.

Notes

  • We did find that Deuce didn't translate as well as we hoped.  In Alternity, he was very good with the bow, taking out some hefty creatures on his own.  In DND terms, he didn't hit the dragon as often and when he did, it wasn't for that much damage at all.
  • Notch translated over pretty well.  He did a lot of damage, which was what we hoped.
  • I think Reece is somewhere in between.  He lost his damaging spells but gained a lot of buffing ability and divination type spells, not to mention healing.  So, it worked out.
  • It was a very short session.  We still did a few character things and one guy forgot his character sheet.  We are going to save copies of it on our yahoo group to stop that.
  • The items they found on the giants and the dragon were things the players wanted for their characters, and purchased, so we introduced them that way.  It was fun and it worked out!
  • The battles were very interesting.  The giants were tough until Notch got close to them or Reece hit them all with a spell.  The dragon was tough due to its AC but that was about it.
