The Return

April 28, 2011

The group decides to take Ander's father back to Candlekeep.  Teldryl is taking care of repairs and the guild so that is in good hands.

They go back to Candlekeep. Snarl is a little reticent to agree to go and it seems there is more to the story but the overall gist is that it involved the "accidental" burning of a book, a pretty big offense given the nature of Candlekeep. The group finds a number of ancient Netherese texts for Snarl to offer in appeasement and they prepare to leave.

Ander is able to teleport the group near his family's home outside of the village.  They make their way into the house and find it in good repair considering it has not been lived in for about three years. Mysteriously, there are some delectable cheesecakes which have not rotted, so the group enjoys these. After settling in, the group decides that they will take the information of the breach in the wards to the Keeper. Ander's dad plans to visit with old friends who start showing up and to reacquaint himself with the village.

Ander, Vahn, and Brax make their way to the gate of Candlekeep. Vahn is immediately suspected of doing things he shouldn't when the gate guard sees him. It seems that his reputation has stayed long after he has departed. Ander tries to convey the urgency of getting an audience with the Keeper. The guard is not too impressed and states that it will take a few days. Inari and Snarl also have an encounter with a silver-haired elf woman. Snarl in fact talks to her for some time but is quite vague about the details of the conversation (the group finds out later that this is the Guardian, a powerful silver dragon charged with protecting the interests of Candlekeep; Snarl later admits that the book he accidentally burned was the Guardian's diary). Paavu has been keeping watch over Ander's dad back in the village during this time.

Ander decides that he needs to see the Keeper sooner and Vahn says he remembers enough of the old passages to get in unimpeded.  He sneaks the group in to see the Keeper of the Tomes, Ulraunt, when they are not summoned, in fact the two of them (Brax got a little lost in the twists and turns) show up in the Keeper's personal quarters.  When they tell the Keeper of the breach of defenses, he's not happy and wants proof.  Ander  describes the doorknob and how it was used. He also expresses his dismay that the Keeper knows nothing of the note that was left in the restricted area awhile back, They teleport back to Scornubel to use the doorknob.  Ulraunt is already not happy about their ability to do that.  When they show him the doorknob and how they can go back, he wants it to destroy it.

It takes a little negotiating  but they let him have the doorknob to destroy it.  Over the next day through a ritual involving several senior mages and priests,Ulraunt tries to do so but can't.  The party is summoned to a meeting with Ulraunt and the other senior parties. He discusses the failure to destroy it and how his colleagues think the presence of a few of the party may aid (Paavu discussed the "marking" of the party members by various powers to a priest over the time spent at Candlekeep). The group is a bit suspicious regarding the plan and wants to know if the Guardian has given her blessing regarding it. The group sees through the weak lie of approval, is unsatisfied with how the meeting is going, and actually gets up and leaves. Down in the tunnels of the Keep, they ask Snarl to summon the Guardian as it seems that he has a connection to her. They discuss with the Guardian the goings-on at Candlekeep and their concerns. When she seems to stay impartial and is hesitant to commit to a course of action, the exchange grows heated, with Brax especially angered by his contention that the Guardian is hiding behind a type of neutrality as well as her unwillingness to commit to support of the Keeper's actions.

Ander attempts to call upon Oghma and asks the Binder to reveal who the "traitors to Candlekeep are." All, including the Guardian, hear the answer: "Ulraunt, the mage, and the priest (the two also leading the discussion at the meeting). The Guardian does not have a good answer for this. The group's mind is made up: they will go to the location for the ritual, expecting to be attacked or at least double crossed.

At the ritual site the group sees the Keeper and traitorous parties arrayed with the doorknob placed on the altar. Vahn begins circumambulating around the situation. As the Keeper prepares to begin the ritual, Ander points his sword at the Keeper's back and demands that he admit his guilt and reveal the plan. A tense exchange ensues during which the group prepares for a fight. Vahn makes his way to the altar and grabs the doorknob. Luckily, most of the group notices two others furtively smile at this action as if this was the plan after all. Paavu calls them out and they attempt to play ignorant, which leads the group to quick action. The Keeper pleads with Ander for help in outing the seemingly revealed traitors and then Brax and Vahn dive into the fray with the other party members contributing to the quick demise of the rogue agents.

Standing over the dead bodies of the "traitors" the group quickly decides to access information from them through a ritual. Luckily Ander's Tarrasque scale contains within it the knowledge to compel the recently deceased to answer queries.

(However, he reveals to the group that in a diviniation, they might help.  Since two of the party were touched by powers, one by chaos and one by entropy, that might help them destroy it.  The group goes to the ritual expecting something to happen to them.  They confront Ulraunt before he can do the ritual.  However, they realize their mistake.  Ulraunt might be arrogant, with some power to back it up, but he was not the one causing the problem!  They all saw another mage and priest smirk when they confronted Ulraunt!  They quickly end those two. ) Delete this if okay.

  • An off week for me.  Felt that way.  It started slow but did get better.
