Avenel is dead

January 27, 2011

Avenel is dead.  Let us be perfectly clear on this fact or nothing that follows will make sense.

The group is standing over Avenel and wondering what to do.  Thessa got away and they aren't sure how long the charm they put on her will last.  Will she come back right away?  If so, will she have followers?  Or be by herself?  In any case, they don't want to be around.  One of them goes outside to the tavern patrons, some of whom they recognized from other encounters with the thieves guild, and order them to clean up the body.  They also say that they are in charge and that Thessa had to leave to do something else.

Whether or not they were believed is up in the air but the people in the tavern obeyed because Avenel was no push over and here he was dead in front of them.  So, either Thessa did it and they have her blessing or they did it and they have Thessa's blessing.  Either way, none of the people wanted to incur the  parties wrath, so they did as they were told.

They then decide on two things.  One, Vahn really wants his boots and to keep them, he has to get the package to Berdusk.  And two, the group really wants Avenel's home.  I mean, they had already invaded it, so they figured it was theirs anyway.

So, Darksouls, Bell and redcloak go to Berdusk while the rest of them stay in town and watch things.  They do decide that they have to have Avenel's house, so they go there.  They again bully their way in, the guards not being very competent or smart, and start looking around.  There are two women having a conversation in the guest house.  They ignore them at the moment and go to the main house.  There they loot anything they can find.  The idea of having and keeping the house seems like a possibility to them but they still want to take what they can from the house in case it can't happen.

They go back to the guest house and find a woman named Koralyn talking to Seera Uthmir, a known merchant house of Elturel.  Seera was here, with some guards, to talk to Avenel about some trading possibilities.  Koralyn is wondering about the group and where Avenel is and what this means.  Vahn, having dumped Bell, is looking for some action so flirts with Koralyn, who obliges him by taking him the next room.  The rest of the group convinces Seera that Avenel was not legitimate and dealing with him would be bad.  They give her some names of more reputable traders and merchants with whom she could deal with in Scornubel.

Meanwhile, Koralyn is trying to get the heck out of there.  The group had bluffed their way into the house using Thessa's name, not knowing that Koralyn was also a high ranking guild official.  When they tried to bluff her, she called Thessa, and Thessa explained some things that shook Koralyn.  Before she could leave, the group was back.  Seeing that Vahn was receptive, she got him alone where she hoped to drug him and then get out of there.  However, it wasn't working.  It took much longer than she hoped it would.  And she really wanted to use the papers she had found to indicate that Avenel was dealing with Baeric to Thessa, although it was mostly moot know with Avenel's death, which has already been established.

In the end, Koralyn managed to get out of there by leaving the papers she found about Baeric with the group.  Teldryl followed to ask questions and while Koralyn tried not to be rude to her, she was curt in her answers until she could get to somewhere safe.  She also went to meet with some other members of the thieves guild to get their take on all of this.

The group decides to go see Lady Ambermantle.  They heard that she had been replaced by Thessa and wanted to see her reaction.  They go to her with the paper and the assistant manages to get them in for a quick meeting.  Lady Ambermantle is quite impressed by what they have found out and what they have done so far.  She thanks them on behalf of the town and then tells them that she will let the papers stand, that they can use them to act on her authority to root out the thieves guild and deal with them as they see fit.  They haggle a bit on what that means but Lady Ambermantle eventually includes a provision that allows them to call up six guard patrols if needed in their pursuit of this.  Further, after the group brazenly asks for a reward, Lady Ambermantle lets them have Avenel's house!  They leave, more confused than ever if this is Lady Ambermantle.

Finally, the group is unsure of what to do.  Vahns' sword again reminds him that there are evil elves that need repentin' in the forest to the east, and so they decide to go deal with that.  The sword is given Vahn a general direction of which way to go, which takes them directly into the ambush area.  The orcs fight well and Bamarden almost sees himself overwhelmed by a group of the orcs but the others show up in time to rescue him.

GM Notes

  • I don't know why I started this like A Christmas Carol but there it is.
  • The group got in a very big blow to the thieves guild with the death of Avenel.  It was a good thing as he was ruthless and wanted to get rich based on the suffering of others.
  • Darksouls was sent to Berdusk as his player was gone.  So, all of the NPCs got sent on that mission.
  • I never know if my NPCs are going to be sympathetic or not.  My idea with Bell was that she did what she had to do to survive.  To me, it makes sense but not sure if the players will see it that way.  (This is more about last session than this but I just thought of it.)
  • I'm trying to slow down level advancement a bit.  I don't like it when characters gain so much power so fast.  I have had a few months pass, or less, but need to find a way for time to pass a bit faster as they improve.  That's the one thing that DND does NOT do well, is that sense of realism within a time frame.  Ah, well.  I can forgive that for the most part.
  • I had the swords talk to each other, even if Darksouls' sword doesn't talk to him directly.  I think I'm amused by that!
  • The group liked the direct path better than the sandbox option.  I think they have some things they want to do, such as take down the thieves guild, but maybe I can help make the individual goals a bit easier and give them some concrete goals.  I don't want to but am more than willing to do that if it will help them.
