Wyverns Unleashed

May 11, 2020

They start at Martin Jenning's place and divide up loot over breakfast.  Once that is the done, the group travels back to Nesme to sell some things.

At the bar, those drinking are approached by a farmer who needs help.  He introduces himself as Aaron Pryde and said he lost cattle and needs it to stop.  He upends a pouch over the table, splashing gold a lot of gold and some rings on the table to entice the group.  Raz realized Sir Pryde wasn't saying everything and when Raz pushes Aaron, Aaron mentions that the markings they have seen indicate big lizards.  However, Aaron's description of what he saw makes Raz, Shyrrik, and Drewgan think wyvern, not dragon.  They agree to it.

They split up the gold and other coins they received, both from Aaron Pryde and the sales.  They told Aaron they would be there the next day, so get some rest and heal up.  They think about getting horses but they are a big investment.  They decide against it and walk to Pryde Ranch.

Aaron's son greets them and is intimidated by Raz, as only little kids can be.  With lots of gasps but excited yelps of terror!  Aaron laughs and invites them inside.  He explain that he has lost guards but he doesn't want to lose more people to it.  Check it out, stop them if you can, but if it's too many, come back for help.  The group agrees and gets going, taking the map of his lands with them to get there.

When they get there, they find the bodies of the cattle that was killed and the guards.  As Aaron said, the cattle weren't fully eaten and the guards were killed by poison and tooth and claws.  There are tracks of wyverns but they also find one single boot print of a large giant.  Raz goes giddy at the prospect of fighting a giant!  They figure the wyverns will be back and so set up an ambush.

It takes several hours of waiting but the wyverns do fly back and land but they don't attack.  They stay near the bodies.  This worries Shyrrik but Drewgan sees his chance and drops Entangle again, catching them in it!  Then the fight is on.  One wyvern is held by the entangle and never gets out.  The other two wyverns are dispatched by Volhoric and Dakxer, with help from Marcus.  When the giant comes storming into the area, roaring a challenge, Raz excitedly goes to meet him!  Even with the potion of growth, Rax still is four feet shorter than the giant but doesn't care.  He matches the giant blow for blow and after thirty seconds of trading blow, Raz defeats the giant!  He screams out in joy and love of battle!

Sadly, the Ettins that had worked their way around, ambushed Shyrrik and club him down.  Before they can do much more than that, though, they are hit by spell and sword and go down themselves.

Searching the bodies yields a lot of coin from Silverymoon.  A lot of gold, including on the giant.  They also see the manacles on the wyverns and find chains in the hill giant's bags.  Very strange as most hill giants lack the patience for this type of training.  They decide to see if there are more giants, who might threaten the cattle, and not because Raz wants to kill a few more.  They find tracks leading east toward the lone large hill in the area and get ready to head there to see what they find.

GM Notes

  • I was mostly okay with my accents.
    • I was going to go with something probably a bit too hard, so went with nasally.  It still worked, I hope.
  • I should have jumped in sooner with the dividing of magic items.
    • It's a mixed bag and is needed but I have to make sure it doesn't take too long.
  • I really like my coin system, which is a silver standard.
    • It means a lot to be offered gold.
    • It means a lot to find gold.
    • It made a horse worth a good set of armor, which is the case
  • Again, I liked how well d20Pro worked.
    • Having said that, it made some mistakes with the giant and ettins that annoyed.  Not so much that it would have changed a lot but still means I need to check them all.
    • I wonder if importing from Hero Lab would fix that and make it so I don't have to worry?  Have to check that.
  • I really like using Hero Lab again.  I know it well, especially for PF1, and like making items in it.
  • Didn't have sound even though I found a few that might have been fun.  Ah, well.
