Finding the Giants

May 18, 2020

The gathers back together after the fight.  Raz is ready to keep moving.  Dakxer is trying to heal everyone.  Shyrrik don't feel so good until Dakxer is done with the healing.  Volhoric wants to go back and report what they have done to the farmer.  He's not against continuing but figures they might as well get paid.  Raz argues that they might lose the trailer if they don't keep on their tracks.  In the end, Volhoric is outvoted and the group keeps going.

The trail is easy to follow and the light forest shows signs of the thinning out.  The oaks, elms, and maples have a few pines here and there.  The trail heads straight for the hills and they aren't trying to cover their tracks.  Raz can't help but be excited at the prospect of more giants to fight!  As they are traveling, a human woman approaches them.  She speaks with the druid, imploring his help as her tree is under attack.  The druid says he will help and will see if companions will help.  She is able to speak in common, although it sounds strange to the group.  She implores the group to stop the giants.

As she speaks, she cries out in pain and stumbles back.  When she comes forward, her shoulder and upper arm are newly bruised.  "Please, they might damage my tree too much for me to help!"  The group agrees and moves forward.

They come to clearing and see two giants on a hill, overlooking the forest.  They have rocks and are practicing hitting trees with said rocks.  Drewgan figures he will be able to scout easily and flies in hawk form to scout.  When the giants notice, they love the moving target and begin to throw rocks at the hawk!  Drewgan is not amused and decides to leave.  He tells the group what he found and they move forward.  Dakxer manages a blessing to give them options as Drewgan seeks to distract them again.  However, it is Marcus that causes confusion, on the giants and his compatriots!

The giants, hit hard by the confusion spell, sit down suddenly, and start to darn their socks!  Raz moves forward to attack but slows as they don't react to him.  He tries to talk to them but all they can speak of is their socks and fixing their socks!  The rest of the group is able to get into position when one of the giant's confusion clears and he attacks Raz!  The fight is on!

Two more hill giants join the first two as well as a Cloud Giant.  Drewgan again lays down an entangle spell but the giants just tear up the grass, barely noticing anything.  Raz slices through one and moves onto the next one.  Shyrrik pelts one with arrows and he and Cerberus take down one.  The cloud giant falls prey to a laughter spell and can't do much but laugh at the group.  Unnerving but when he does manage to attack with his weapon, Raz happily accepts the laughter.  It's a tough fight but soon the giants are down.  The group searches them of treasure and again finds coins of Silverymoon on them plus some gems.

A building stands on a different hill.  As they approach it, Dakxer and Drewgan can tell it is of dwarven craftsmanship originally but the original carvings have been replaced with symbols of snow and snow flakes.  Dakxer knows he has seen that symbol before but can't place it and it bothers him.  They find magic on the door and don't want to chance opening it.  Volhoric is able to climb up and see inside and eventually figures out it an elevator shaft.  He sees no way to open the door.

As they consider the problem, they hear more giants coming back.  Hearing that it's over ten of them, they retreat, thinking about what to do next.  As the giant hunting party returns, the group stops.  They were expecting bear, deer, or lion, some of the native animals in the area.  Instead, they see humans and demi humans on chains, heading toward the building.

4800 xp

GM Notes

  • I did okay with the accents.  Enough to differentiate them, I think.
  • I enjoyed the giants suddenly having to sew and wanting to mend their socks!
  • Tough fight but Raz really doesn't like giants.
    • Seeing the damage numbers that Raz, and the giants, did were impressive!
  • I think I'm giving out too much xp.  Might need to scale that back a bit.
    • Or up the stakes a bit and play it out to epic levels?
  • I'm enjoying it and hope they are as well!
  • I do miss music but I'm not sure it was better.  Might need to try it again.
  • Found a few flaws in d20Pro that aren't easy to track.  I hope it doesn't get to be too much.
