Demons and Angels

November 2, 2020

The group defeated the giants but the storm continues to batter them as they walk to the forest, so Drewgan can transport them to deal with Kydri.  The wind and rain splatter them for the next hour, slowing them a bit, and making the trek miserable.  Then it drops off considerably and allows them to approach the woods at a better pace.  Drewgan again flies again and sees something worrying.  He lands to have a better connection with the earth and see if he was right.

Corruption has appeared in the woods.  He flies close enough to see slime erupting or swelling out of the ground and demons pushing the slime out more.  He heads back and tells the others.  They move up to see what is happening.  A demon pops in and attempts to talk.  It's gaunt figure has red emaciated skin and a rod on its belt with a spear tip.  It asks if they brought the sacrifices to turn into more demons.  That sealed its fate and it is attacked.  When the demon uses the rod, it expands out to a spear and attacks with it.  Another five of those are there and as they watched, more lower demons appear.  Only the ones with the spears proved to be any threat.  It took two hits to down them.  The rest went down with one, either from dagger, sword, or arrow.  The casters stayed out of the way and hit a few times but knew the others could handle this.

After the fight, they take an hour for Drewgan to cleanse the area.  The group helps but it is Raz and Shyrrik who feel Drewgan call upon the primal power of nature to repair the damage done.  The slime slowly fold back into itself until all that is left is a rock, which Volhoric drops into Marcus' bag of holding.  They go find a patrol from Silverymoon and let them know what happened.  The patrol says they will tell others.  The group then keeps going, eventually finding a place to rest for the night rather than transport back.

After scrying on the Kydri's area, they see they can get within fifty feet of him or two miles away.  Rather than give him a clue as to what might happen, they decide to drop fifty feet away from him.  They attack in full.

The group might have been disappointed in the fight if the stakes weren't so high.  Volhoric, Raz, and Shyrrik engaged Kydri, knowing only they can hurt him.  Marcus first held one creature, allowing it to be slain by Volhoric, who let Shyrrik and Raz distract Kydri while he did this.

Then Marcus hit the other allies with feeblemind leaving only one other combatant besides Kydri.

Kydri eventually goes down and in a weird way, that seems to cleanse him.  He takes back his essence, his feathers that he was ranting about during the fight, although the group wasn't listening, and disappears.  The Azatas, also corrupted and helping, are feebleminded.  Between Drewgan and Dakxer, they manage to remove the curse from the Azatas and then the feeblemind.  They thank them for helping them and understand about the one slain.  They pick her up and take her back but do promise to come back and help them.

Raz then announces that he needs to understand what is happening to him.  Spirits have come to him.  When it was just in his dreams, he wasn't worried, but he is seeing them when he is awake now and wants to understand.  As they group prepares to leave, he tells them he will make his own way and hopes to see them in the future.

GM Notes

  • I won't lie.  I really thought this was be a more difficult fight.
    • The idea with the Lillends was to buff the Flayed Angel and Kydri and try to sow discord with some charm or one round stun effects they had.  Two were feebleminded, so never got to do that.
    • The Flayed Angel barely made one attack, against Raz and helping his Oracle path by again opening up spirits.  Otherwise, he was held and then killed.
    • Kydri just took damage too fast, even with as many hit points as he had.  Further, with the buffs, and Raz's regeneration abilities, Kydri couldn't do enough damage on his own.  Kydri was just thinking to attack the healers when he was knocked down.
    • I struggled with allowing extra saves, letting them have extra saves, or letting Kydri have some lair like ability to help them.  This easily could have gone the other way but I did roll a lot of ones in d20Pro for either saves or attacks.  That's the way it went.
  • The opening demon fight is to show there is corruption that has found its way into the area and must be cleansed but also meant to be easy.  I think it was appreciated at worked.
  • I'm not happy with my side and am working on making this adventure better.
