Cold Revenge

August 31, 2020

The group talks a bit more to Kopkis.  They aren't sure what to make of him.  He is giving information and not asking for much in return.  Well, Raz eventually tells Kopkis and Drewgan that he has no idea what they are talking about.  They were discussing how they could get back into favor with Count Sheragar, the fey leader of this area, on the faerie side.  It would seem both Kopkis and Drewgan are on the outs with him and they have some ideas on how to get some favor with him.  Drewgan then casts a spell and when he comes back to the group, he shows them what he saw.

(LOL - Thanks to Tony for this!)

Here is the translation from bird tracks.

Most of the group can figure out that the trolls, where the scouts are, could be bad and decide to head in that direction.

A the group travels to the south, after a few hours of tough going, Drewgan sees that the landscape is changing around them.  He has already been guiding them to the easy path the area.  The Evermoors are scrublands with hills and ravines.  Tough grasses and hilly lands dot the landscape.  This will be offset by a grove of trees, usually oak or elm.  As they go further south, though, the landscape changes to more of a bog.  Wet lands, with standing stagnant water, willow and mangrove trees, start to dominate more.  Now it's tough to see when a drop off or rise happens that will be tough to walk through but Drewgan, scouting from the air, is able to help.  Further, his communing with Nature helps him know the best course.

As Drewgan looks back north, though, things have changed.  Thorn bushes and grown, closing off previous paths.  Further, areas that Drewgan was hoping to take them to also get some thorn growths.  Drewgan lands to talk to them and when they hear this, they decide to head west and see if it clears it up.  After forty minutes of rough traveling, doubling back a few times, and avoiding some slippery and treacherous peat growths.  Then it clears up.  Drewgan is more suspicious of how rapidly it cleared up.  They travel a bit further until finding a place to make camp, again guided by Drewgan to a good area.  They have a fire and eat, talking and joking, sharing drinks.  Soon it is time to turn in and get some rest.

Volhoric is watching when he hears something call to him.  A feeling.  He sees a figure and can't help but go to her, as it does reveal itself to be a her.  The passing thought of waking the others leaves as he wants to spend time alone with her.  He approaches her and she calls to him by name, wanting to meet him.

Emboldened, he goes closer  The woman's attractiveness can't be denied.  The curves are in the right places, even as she stands there waiting for him.  Her clothes are revealing, hinting at what might be below.  It's been a while since such blatant charms worked on Volhoric but he couldn't deny them.  She holds out a gift and Volhoric almost takes it.

"Go stab the half orc," she says, in a sweet voice.  It's sour to Volhoric, though, and instead his own dagger is in his hands, stabbing out.  She cries out in pain as he yells in several languages that they are attacked!

A man riding a dire polar bear appears to the south and calls out for Shyrrik to fight him.  Shyrrik might have obliged but the dragon, oh wait, dragons, appeared and Shyrriks decided those would better quench his arrows.  Shyrrik then finds cover behind a rock but the man won't have it and goes at Shyrrik, his glaive putting frost in the air and on the rock.

Raz rushes off to meet one of the dragons, coming in at the opposite from the other dragon.  Marcus moves as needed, boosting his friends and hindering their enemies.  Drewgan puts up several walls to hinder the creatures coming directly toward them, giving his team precious heartbeats to react.  Dakxer stays in the middle, casting healing as fast as he can.  Soon, due to spell, arrow, or blade, it is down to the two dragons and the group.  Already, Drewgan was nearly frozen solid by the blast from one of the dragons.  And this is after having survived a blast of acid from the other dragon!  The cold dragon does come up and slice Dakxer, dropping him.  Volhoric and Drewgan are able to get closer and help him up but still have the dragon itself.

Shyrrik manages to take down the rider that was after him and when the rider dies, he says, "Beautiful!  Your inheritance, should you want it."  Blue tendrils of cold streak toward Shyrrik and settle on him.  As it does, his skin gets a blue palor, his hair goes white, and his eyes turn a blue, like ice over the northern waters.  Shyrrik then turns his arrows on the cold dragon, hitting with help from his friends boosts.  Volhoric finishes off the cold dragon as Drewgan and Raz take care of the acid one.

The group lies on the ground, catching their breath.  They are relieved when the healing starts!  Then there is the process of going through the things.  It would seem this group had killed another adventuring group.  One that had bought a cloak out from under Raz!  That, along with much more, was among the treasures they found.  They talk about how to divide it up but soon get tired and rest, again with someone watching and wary.

GM Notes

  • Need to get more role playing
    • Part of the reason that players were confused is due to emails with information.
    • Still not sure how to handle this as it's the case that those who ask more, get more time.
    • Maybe some quick questions in email to start some items?
  • Maybe that's the wrong way to say it as there is some role playing.  I don't want people lost and confused about all that's being said but I still liked how the information happened.
  • I'm losing voices.  Trying to practice old voices for NPCs so that I can create a variations for more and a few that I'm trying aren't quite right.  :(
  • I did explain that these dragons had their eggs stolen from them and had been working with the giants, even though they weren't the type to do so.
    • Their eggs were then used in rituals against them to make them think the party had destroyed their eggs, instead of the ones who had.
    • They had been working to set this ambush.  One among them could divine and they knew the group would come to the moors eventually.
    • That allowed them to change the landscape and try to funnel the group to a good ambush spot.  It didn't happen but they weren't to let the opportunity to take out the killers!
  • Having said I need to do more role playing, there is good role playing in combat.
    • Marcus using some enchantment spells to boost friends and to stop enemy spell casters.
    • Drewgan using walls to hinder the opponents, even if only for a round or two.
    • Shyrrik ignoring the challenge to attack the dragon until the rider couldn't be ignored.
    • Raz rushing toward a dragon, assuming his friends will be there!
    • Volhoric using his mobility and invisibility to good use.
    • Dax healing and blessing them with choices that made the difference.
  • I will also say that this is the time of PF where it does break down a little.
    • The characters' best saves go to double digits while their worse ones stay single digit bonuses.
    • The BAB also start to have big gaps in them between martial characters and non martial characters.
    • I enjoy PF1 and don't need balance, per se, but players who recognize their characters strengths and weaknesses and playing to them, which this group does well.
