City Adventure

September 15, 2011

The group finished grabbing what they can at the Cult of the Dragon place and then heads back to town.  Lady Ralee praises them and they have obviously hurt the cult of the dragon in this area pretty well.  That was a major base and now it’s gone.

They spend some time tracking down a few leads on the demonic cult.  Paelias tracks down some leads.  Meanwhile, several of them hear that another noble is wanting to hire them for something.  Eltherien tracks this down and goes to talk to him.  Lord Corlar Obuleth is quite congenial and tells Eltherien that he lost a ship and its cargo to the north.  However, while he is interested in retrieving the cargo if they can, the bigger thing is that his son wanted to be the one to find it and Lord Obuleth agreed.  Now, his son isn’t overdue and could be coming back, but Lord Obuleth fears the worst and wants someone to be looking for his heir.

While Eltherien and Lord Corlar Obuleth are talking, Lord Corlar Obuleth’s daughter, Shella, interrupts and then leaves.  As Eltherien is leaving, Shella wants to talk to him and they arrange to meet later.

Paelias watches as a noble, Lord Szest Ducast, gets a shipment of containers but doesn’t think anything about it.  And other than that shipment, which the people looked nervous to Peleas, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.  Paelias goes and talks to people and finds out that Lord Szest’s family wasn’t doing well until a few short years ago when Lord Szest’s father died and he took over.  He managed to turn around the family’s businesses and now they are doing very well.  Certainly Lord Szest could be that business savvy but given that they think it’s linked to the demon cult, Peleas is suspicious.

And that’s when he finds out that the rumor is that Lord Szest deals in slaves.  And the containers he got could have held slaves.  Peleas curses himself for not paying more attention to them.  He makes sure he has the papers from Lady Ralee, allowing them to search in the name of the city, gets the rest of the group and then heads over to the mansion.

Getting up to the front door of the walled estate is easy.  However, the chamberlain is quite unhappy to see so many non humans at his door, and is quite rude to them.  He leaves the group to wait for fifteen minutes.  During that time, probably Lord Szest’s daughters come out and get into a  carriage.  They noticed the group and giggled a bit and were excited for a party that was happening at another noble’s house. The group is left waiting.  It’s not until Peleas shoves the papers of authority in his face that they are let in and allowed an audience with Lord Szest.

As soon as they meet Lord Szest, it’s obvious where the chamberlain got his attitudes.  Lord Szest does not care for them, either.  He’s belligerent and thinks they are wasting his time.  Paelias says they will search and Lord Szest says he knows his rights as he helped draft those authority papers.  Lord Szest gets tired of them and has the guards show them out.  They leave the manor, which they couldn’t have searched anyway, but they can search the grounds.  The guards don’t seem to care as long as they don’t try and go to the manor house.

At the stables, a guard tries to hide a trap door by standing on it but the group notices.  They can’t open it with brute strength and try and get the guard to open it.  He says he can’t.  Eltherien and Paelias are able to use magic to force it open and they take the guard that tried to hide it with them.  They find a worked stone corridor that heads toward the house.  The guard leads and obviously steps over a tile on the floor.  Qynn notices and points it out to the rest of the group.  They all step over it and keep going.  Then the guard looks to a secret door but glances away.  Again Qynn notices.

Peleas has had enough and confronts the guard.  The guard wants to lip off but is alone and so tries to remain civil.  He does say he couldn’t let them in and so why bother pointing things out that he can’t help with?  When Qynn gets physical, the guard does try and invoke Asmodeas name for help!  However, the only help he receives is death by poison.  Before he died, other guards came down.  One, a man named William, was not happy with what he saw but the other guards seem to know about it.  The other guards flee, leaving William behind.  However, Peleas fey steps in front of them.  And then that’s when the ladder in the wall retracts and oil starts pouring down the walls!

The group goes back to the secret door and Qynn pushes the door into a chamber.  The dwarf realizes that it’s an elevator, not just a chamber, from the stone.  They let William in with them but force the others to flee as they go down the elevator.  The oil ignites and some of it is on the walls, creating some flame and smoke, but not enough to hurt the group.  The dwarf knows they descended twenty five feet to another corridor.  Searching it reveals more traps and secret doors.

Qynn opens a secret door and as he is opening the door, he sees a room but there is a gap between the door and the room.  They weren’t able to get to the door.  As Qynn keeps opening the door, and sees the back side of it, he sees there is no handle.  As the door swings wide open, the trap is sprung and a block smashes the people, spraying Qynn with blood and gore.  Qynn and the group are stunned by this.

The group finds more secret door but the stones again talk to the dwarf and he knows that there are more chambers like this one.  They leave those rooms alone and search the rest of the place.  One door has a magical trap on it and Eltherien and Peleas go to disarm it but aren’t able to do so.  They don’t set it off either.  So, they try again.  However, the magic slams into them and everything goes black.

They wake up with William just outside the manor house.  They know they have to get back inside or everything will be cleaned before they can get back.  A crowd has gathered and some city guards come up.  In showing them the authority papers, and saying what they saw including William who was a guard there, the city guards agree to help and all of them storm the manor.  Lord Szest and his wife, as well as the chamberlain and some other servants and guards are gone, but his eight year old daughter is there as well as some other servants and guards.  The group is disgusted by him leaving his daughter, as well as the other two who left earlier.

A search of the manor grounds reveals more slaves that were probably going to be sacrificed, an obvious temple to Asmodeas and a treasure chest that is protected by very powerful magic, inscribed with demon runes and visages.  When some mages and clerics arrive, they manage to get rid of the magical traps on the chest and reveal a severed demon hand in blood, that is still dripping out of the severed wrist.  It’s quite powerful and the clerics and mages take it away to be destroyed.

They are again thanked by Lady Ralee.  They request the house but she is hesitant.  She eventually confides in them that she would be fine with them becoming nobles of the city if they would swear fealty to it.  However, she has good news!  Lord Nasher was successfully raised but they haven’t announced that yet to the general public.  Very few know about it.  The group expresses concern as to who came back but Lady Ralee, while appreciative of the advice, is confident in the clerics who performed the ritual.  She says she will gladly speak on their behalf to Lord Nasher and hope they do become nobles of the city.

Eltherien remembers his meeting with Shella and they go to meet her.  They do confirm they have some time to do what they agreed to do for Lord XXX.  Lady Shella, although she isn’t hung up on the title, wants to go with them.  She is a trained mage and it’s obvious her father is old fashioned and doesn’t think that a women can do anything other than make babies.  She wants to help bring her brother back and prove her worth.  While they technically don’t agree, they do say when and where they are leaving on the morn and if someone is there to join them, who are they to say?  Shella thanks them and takes her leave.

GM Notes

  • As I wrote about how the cult’s base is now destroyed, I realized that the *base* isn’t, just the cult’s precense there.  So now I’m really mad I didn’t get pictures of it to have someone else there for a later adventure!  It could get old but it would be funny if they had to clear it out every once in a while!
  • Had some fun playing the servant and Lord Szest as jerks but people who think they are in the right.  Nobility makes right.  Or money.  Either way, it was fun.  I liked that the chamberlain also thought the elves were females, with bodyguards, instead of males.  What else could they be as they are so pretty?
  • I liked having the stone talked to the dwarf.  I need to play that up more as I thought it made sense and was fun.
  • I liked the contrast between the nobles.  One didn’t care about the non human nature of the group and treated them well.  He went so far as to NOT use elvish, knowing he would butcher it.  His daughter wants to help and wants to get dirty, or doesn’t mind doing so, to help.  In contrast, the servants of Lord Szest were condescending to the group to their faces!  I liked that.
  • There wasn’t combat but there were some tense times with the guards when they searched the manor grounds.  And then when the trap was sprung and the oil started pouring down.  However, some critical rolls on trying to bash down the doors came at the best time and they were able to avoid any harm from it.
