Secrets of Daggerford

December 28, 2018

Jinn finished up his spell and admired his work.  That's when he noticed the cold.  In Flamerule?  Further, as Jinn looked out to the street, a fog had risen up and covered the streets.  Jinn saw the figured standing in the middle of the fog, looking up at him.

Arakus.

How?  Jinn was at the hanging!  He still remembers the sickening snap when the rope went taut.  They hadn't been allowed to see what happened to the body but Commander Miller had assured them the Duke didn't like Red Wizards and the court wizard, Delfen, knew what to do.  Arakus pointed up at Jinn, who hid behind the wall.  Jinn reached out and closed the shutters.  Then ran to Tyrel's door and pounded on it.  Tyrel wasn't happy at being wakened but woke up when he, too, saw the figure.  As Tyrel woke the others, Jinn couldn't resist another look at the figure.  It pointed at him again.  Then down to the road.  Jinn hid again.  Jinn saw the gaunt figure in his mind.  The bald head and tattoos.  Tattered robes.  Sunken eyes.  Arakus pointed at Jinn again, then back to the ground.  Jinn hoped the others dressed quickly!

When the group was ready, Jinn led the way out the tenement house.  The front was on the opposite side of their rooms and it was warm, a normal Flamerule night.  Fog drifted from the alley and Jinn headed there, taking several steps into the fog.  Arakus was at the far end of the alley.  Jinn watched as Arakus faded out and the fog started to disperse, leaving behind a book?  Before Hang could say anything, Jinn rushed forward to grab it!  Jinn had already picked it and was paging through it, seeing maps in it as well.  The group went to the Lady Luck, having eggs, bacon, toast, and stew from last night as they poured over what they found.

The maps were two different maps of Daggerford.  One had notes on it about people around the town and the other just had Xs and ?s on buildings.  Dorn knows many of the buildings, temples were marked, but many residences as well that he didn't know.  They spend some time figuring out the buildings and the names.  They talk about going to the Chateau but decided to check out some other buildings.

They pick a building that looks like a normal residence.  As Tyrel goes up and knocks, though, he almost wants to walk away and not care but shrugs it off.  Hang casts a Detect Magic and sees many layers of magic but can't figure them out.  They notice them on the cellar door as well and go into the cellar.  A voice tells them not to come further but they can't resist and soon it's a fight with some creatures.  Dorn scratches off part of a summoning circle which calls another creature!  That one summons two more!  It's a fight.  Afterward, they do find a key in the dirt where the first creature was.  Hang worried the bodies down there would come back but was happy when they didn't.

Two more marked houses are close and they go to them, meeting the high priest of Harvest House, Chauntea's temple.  Maerovyna asks what they are doing at their house and they ask about healing potions.  They go to Ruckert's house next, as Maerovyna knew of him, and talk to him.  Jinn charms him and Ruckert shows them his house and all of his slugs, slimes, lizards, and other exotic things.  Ruckert spills a lot on Paine, Olin, and a few others.  It is only as they are leaving and walking away, before the Charm wears off, that Hang realizes that they hadn't seen all of the basement.

The group goes to Commander Miller at the barracks and she's worried about this.  She gives them gold badges, the heraldry of the town, and lays out their parameters on what they can and cannot do.  Then asks them to keep investigating.  The Table of the Sword, devoted to Tempus, is next to the barracks and they inquire within.  They find out that Baergon hasn't been there in a few days but that's not uncommon.  They find where Baergon lives and see it's next to Fairfortunte hall, also marked on the map, and head there.  Again, Bando, high priest of Tymora, is absent and they worry about him.  The group promises to check on Bando before going next door to Baergon's place.

Baergon answers the door!  They are shocked and he immediately invites them inside, asking if they want training.  The front room has little furnishings in it and has a practice circle marked on the wood floors.  Dorn says he wants training, and Baergon asks if it's with practice swords or real?  Baergon assures him he can heal him of any real damage.  When Dorn says practice, Baergon goes to get the swords.  That's when it hits Dorn.  The man they were talking to was a human but Baergon is a half elf.  He barely has time to hiss that at his friends before Baergon comes back into the room, holding practice swords.

GM Notes

  • A bit summarized but I don't have the book in front of me to show all of the clues in it, nor the order in which they were found.
  • Really enjoyed this!  I had several ideas of what I would do if they didn't get the spell book but fortunately, Thom had Jinn grab it right away!
  • Worked out well that Dorn was from here.  And some good running around.
  • I liked my use of music.  I think that worked.
  • I still need to work on details but they were fine.
  • We ended a bit early so we could roll hit points and talk a bit about leveling up!
