Prison and the Rescue

February 27, 2019

They catch their breath after the battle and then decide to go down into the darkness they found.  There is a door that is locked and while Maldar manages to open it, it does cost him a tool from his kit.  It's a long series of stairs going down to a chasm with a fifteen foot gap to the other side.  After some looking around, they find slots that when a gem is put in them, the gem is crushed and a magical bridge is formed.  As they continue, they find another door and when light is finally brought to bear on it, reveals a riddle.  They try an answer but it changes to another riddle.  When they try an answer to that, the door opens.  Maldar finds, or bypasses the traps in the corridor, but it does cost him more tools and his kit is now not as complete.  They continue past some statues to another door and get past that to a throne room.

The room is huge, with twelve foot ceilings, more statues, and runes on the floor.  Realizing the riddles had to do with the Four Horsemen, when a Horsemen is mentioned, it summons four undead and wakens the skeleton on the throne.  They defeat these foes and find the cache of the prisoner's items, which they distribute.  Still excited about this, they go back outside and decide to get back to camp.  When they arrive, the Steel Eagles have not yet made it back.  They set up a fire and food and rest.  Hang decided she doesn't want to carry the axe she repaired anymore, so shoves it into the bag of holding.  Then looks shocked when she hears the ripping sound, the bag seems to swallow itself, and the axe is gone.  They discuss the magic items and distribute them, with Dorn finally getting plate armor.  He's quite happy.

In the morning, when the Steel Eagles aren't back, they are worried and go looking for them.  Chandi tracks them by their scent.  After several hours of trudging in the swamp, they see something lying near a fallen tree.  Chandi goes forward to get a closer look and sees one of the Steel Eagles but can't tell if she is alive.  Jinn feels the connection to Chandi dim and Chandi hides.  Maldar creeps up to find out what is wrong and finds Brianna.  Maldar stealths up to her and figured she was dead when she coughs and murmurs "dragon" at him.

"DRAGON!!"  Maldar can't help but yell it, he's so shaken at that idea and that's when the green dragon makes its presence known.

The green dragon creates a wall of thorns, leaving only Dorn and Maldar with him but not before Hang was able to summon a storm cloud and blast it with lighting.  Dorn is happy to try his plate armor and sword against the scales of the dragon.  As the fight progresses, all but Jander of the Steel Eagles are there and the group rescues them.  Jander shows up later on the dragon's side!  The group takes him alive, but not before he nearly kills Maldar with magic missiles and other magic spells.  Dorn takes the poison breath of the dragon and dishes out more and finally prevails over the green dragon.

There were many close calls in the fight.  At one point, the dragon managed to charm Dorn but before Dorn could attack his friends, Jinn managed to dispel it.  Jander blasted Maldar with many magic missiles and lightning but then Hang and Maldar attacked him with lightning and blade, taking him down.  The Steel Eagles couldn't move and had to lie there and watch, happy when the Danger Magnets won!

Brianna is grateful for the rescue.  As are all of them.  They say that while Jander did side with the dragon, and they speak of how jealous Jander had become of Jinn and the knowledge Jinn had and found, that Jander was looking for something else and was willing to bargain with the dragon for it.  They say they want out of the swamp and take Jander with them as the group indicates they are going to harvest parts from the dragon.  The Steel Eagles don't even rest, taking a few more potions, but then leaving the group to the carcass.

GM Notes

  • I don't think I did well with descriptions at all this time.  I need to get back to that.
  • The music was mostly okay but a few times not sure it fit the mood I wanted.
  • Chandi doesn't like to fight, specifically bite, undead!  She made that known.
  • I think that BADD, Bothered About Disposable Dragons, isn't happy with me.
  • They needed light in the prison area because the Netherese, who built it, also needed light.
  • I know that just the dragon wouldn't have stood a chance, even with the lair abilities, and wonder if I should have had some trolls attack the others?  That might have made it more interesting of a fight but I didn't.
  • Tough for me to tell how tough a fight is until after the fact.  Again, several weren't hit in either fight, but those that were hit felt it was tough!
  • The undead in the prison could NOT hit, so their powers didn't come to bear.
  • In text messages, Auril is not happy that Hang lost the axe.
