Holiday and the Chateau

January 16, 2019

The group realizes that they have been very busy since they arrived in Daggerford, only four days ago!  Mission after mission after mission.  They decided they need a break and some minor festivals are happening over the next few days.

Before leaving the ruins, Hang decides to make a big sacrifice to Auril.  She starts a fire in the house, casts shatter on the floorboards, and then tries to collapse it all inward, to then freeze and offer to Auril.  It works better than Hang intended.  She finds herself in a giant cathedral of ice.  White and shades of blue ice make up the cathedral.  Up near the altar, Auril herself stands waiting.  Hang makes her way up there, not seeing that the others are up above in a balcony.  When they try to speak, though, a small ice elemental forms and tells them to watch quietly.

When Hang gets closer to the altar, she sees that there is a silver statue on the altar.  It's in silver, with some blue as well, and of a woman, dressed in a fine ball gown and holding one hand up while looking to the heavens.  The dress itself is pleated, which is an unusual choice.  Auril points to the statue and says, "You will find this, you will make it holy to me again, and you will put it to rest in a temple you create."  Hang then finds herself above Daggerford.  Then darting off toward the mountains to the north east.  Somewhere east of the Herald's tower but before the dwarven kingdom of Illefarn, the vision dives into and under the mountains.  Somewhere deep in some caves, Hang sees the statue encased in ice next to a body.  Briefly Hang is back at the cathedral before it ends and they are all back in Daggerford.  Their final breaths still visible in the hot summer air.  They head back to their rooms and get ready for the festivals.

There are games, food, and drink.  Jinn avoids it all to learn more spells and study the books.

A cryer announces the opening of a new fest hall, the House of Pleasures.  Dorn finds that interesting as Daggerford uses a public board with guards to read out notices to any who cannot.  The second day, their curiosity gets the better of them and they go to check it out.  The main floor has a wide range of food and alcohol from up and down the Sword Coast.  The food included beef steaks and ribs, pork chops and pork ribs, chicken, turkey, pheasant, raccoon, opossum, rabbit, and elk.  There were claims at Owlbear steaks, Worg flank, Bullette cutlets, Axe Beak wings.  The usual assortment of cheeses, Arabellen cheddar, Goldenfields Gouda, Waterdeep Beer cheese, and Neverwinter Colby.  A few apples and strawberries were the limited fare for fruit.  There are also perfumes, from rose to jasmine, and drugs, mainly qat and marijuana, and prostitutes willing and able to offer their services.

Once Jinn has learned a few spells, he comes out of his room and hears about the House of Pleasure.  But he is ready to tackle the Chateau and so the next morning, they start watching the Chateau.  They keep missing the entrance or exit of people from it, so aren't sure how that works, but do notice that while the bodyguards are dressed in woolens and leather, the guests themselves are in silks and fine linen.  They clean themselves up well and Tyrel works on several lines of why they are there.  As they head over in the early morning hours, they take a shot of whiskey and even spill some on their clothes, to help sell a night of revelry.

It's not needed.

The key opens into a small foyer, with an expensive woven rug and tapestries.  One shows the North, perhaps even Mithral Hall, while the other shows scenes from Thay.  Actually moving scenes!  They quickly move past the tapestries and go to the other door.  Hang says to say the password they found and as Tyrel does that, Hang sees the evocation magic fade on the door.  They go inside to find a combination of sleeping chambers and laboratory.  There are bookshelves, although Jinn can't hide his disappointment at their being empty, an alchemy set and ingredients, and some notes and money!  There is also a permanent Teleportation circle in the room and Jinn finds notes for two addresses, which he thinks are within a tenday of Daggerford.

They also find a statue of a cat, a skull, the ritual to enchant a blade as a dragon slayer, two rings, and a lantern.  While the lab is set up, Jinn completes the ritual on Dorn's sword, making it a Black Dragon Slayer.  They identify the other items then pack it up and take it all back to their own rooms.

The next day, they speak with Gina to find out that Paine is back and owns the House of Pleasures.  They go to Paine's house to find her packing up her belongings.  They introduce themselves and say that they are interested in buying the house.  And then the interrogation begins.  When she figures out what they are doing, Paine isn't amused and leaves.  The party distrusts her even more but also wonder about Gina and go back to question Gina.  Gina answers them, mildly scolding Dorn for it.

Then they decided to activate a portal to investigate what Arakus was doing and if he is still alive or not.

GM Notes

  • I had a lot of fun!
  • Again, no fight and that doesn't bother me.  Hopefully the players are okay with it.
  • A bit summarized, especially the items.  I wanted to get broad strokes and maybe fill it out later, including the food and drink at the House of Pleasure.
