Evacuation

July 8, 2008

Quick Overview:

While in the woods exploring, a group of goblins rush past us. The group that past us going to the old pyramid had the necklaces of power we had seen earlier.

As we are there looking at the new pyramid, we notice paths going off in different directions. Then we notice another group of goblins come in, Duncan can recognize that it is a different group coming in, from a different clan, as they give a standard goblin greeting.

North, South, and South-east trails.

Duncan thought he saw something as the goblins make their way towards the pyramid. Kernosh recognizes a purplish glow coming from the top of the pyramid. It stops and there is some cheering coming from the goblins by the pyramid.

Trumpets blare from the north as they herald the arrival of a group of humans. A human dressed in plate and we can all see the symbol of bane on his plate armor as he walks in with his group. The goblins are in awe at the sight of the humans in their mist. The bannite walks over and starts talking to the hob-goblin leaders.

The human starts to climb the stairs up the pyramid. The top of the pyramid starts to open. A huge obsidian/onyx orb lifts out of the top of the pyramid. It’s approximately 10 feet in diameter. Purple flames start erupting from the orb, when a large pupil can suddenly be seen in the orb. There is a booming voice in goblin as the eye is looking at the goblins as it talks to the priest of Bane. The priest and the others can speak to the others, so it must all be in goblin.

Suddenly, a goblin points in our direction and shouts. Cue chase scene.
Cabal casts sounds of screaming in all directions of the woods as the party takes off.
At first, the group makes good distance. Then the sounds draw the goblins towards the party. The two dragonborn attack some bushes with dragon breath, lighting it on fire, while moving off at a new angle to the fire. Eventually the group heads and crosses the road, and then moves off at an angle to the road, running parallel to it. Orrin stops the party explaining he hears something from ahead.

Orrin & Duncan move ahead of the group to explore. 50 feet ahead they see a hobgoblin and a group of goblins stopped and actively listening for the party. There are 2 goblins that run north and come back to start a fire, the other 7 are there and one hobgoblin.

Making sounds in the distance to distract them, the party moves forward and attacks. Duncan takes out the hobgoblin, Sereck takes out minion with his breath weapon. Sereck and Kernosh drop. Duncan takes out the rest and everyone eventually survives.

Behind us on the path, about 800 yards, a group is running up the path. We hide in the woods. A group including 1 human sets up camp very close to the parties hiding spot. The group is keeping very quiet from the 2 hobgoblins, 1 human, and 2 goblins as other goblins move in and report. We have to stay on watch in this method.

50 goblins, 3 hobgoblins and a human now occupy the 1st clearing. From that clearing back, when we get to the edge of the woods, we don’t find any evidence that any other groups of goblins have gone out. We get to the edge of the woods and continue the extra couple of miles to the village.

Cabel creates an illusion to show what the goblins would do to the city guard, and we convince the town to leave. They say it will take at least a day to get their livestock together, although they keep trying to get more time.

Jon does not hear the W in whole and thinks Cabal was going to make a hole, not make the wagons whole.

We lead the village away, and find 2 more villages along the way, and finally a caravan of 120 people approach the gates 5 days later to Glenmaple.

We tell everyone what happens in a full report to the Duke, including our sponsor Lyrmar Dagus. 3 days later some of the advance scouts come back. The first village had already been burnt and destroyed, with a horde of goblins heading west. Long before they would reach Glenmaple a sufficient force should be brought against them. Once that happened people realize we did something that saved a lot of lives, the Duke brought us back in and decided to give us a little bit of money and a riding steed each.

150 Silver Reward, turned in quest XP: 650, riding steed.

Completing this mission, we look for a patron who wishes us to search out the villages to the north to see how they are doing.

We check on some villages, the 1st village was warned. The 2nd village was ready and prepped to go. The 3rd village was only 12 miles away, but it was 3 hours away by horse. There was tons of smoke as we headed north east towards the village. It was on fire. The thing that worried us most about the flames and the lights, some of the flames that were engulfing the houses looked purple. Purple is the default damage type of Necrotic (purple is the new black).

Looking at the village, 6 humans were there, one had the Bane symbol, and they were doing a ceremony with the dead bodies.

DM Notes

  • The new rules for using skills worked very well in the chase scene.  Also, the players had some great ideas to make it harder to be chased.
  • I need to flesh out the NPCs more but I did like how it worked out.
  • Stupid W.
  • I also liked how the PCs could decide upon their quest to keep things moving.  I get final say as the DM but they do get input.
