Cormyr
A very summarized history
Cormyr is a kingdom. For as long as all of you remember, Azoun IV ruled. You always heard he was just and fair but none of you ever felt it if that was the case. Then, four years ago, after Arabel was attacked, Azoun supposedly died in the fighting. Ever since then, there has been a regent for the child on the throne, Azoun V. And things have only gotten worse for everyone, especially you guys. The nobles are squabbling for position and maybe the throne. The higher ups don’t notice on whom they step to advance. There is more crime than their used to be. Before, all of the streets were safe. Now, a few back alleys are dangerous. It used to be easy to earn a bit of coin for a tale but after the attack, people seem to be tight with their coin purse strings.
Cormyr is a kingdom of strict laws and one of them seems to be no luck for you guys. There are rules as to how many people can gather together with weapons. There are rules on the types and kinds of weapons. Further, weapons must be peace bonded against quick draws. Using a weapon in a fight is very serious. The guards, called Purple Dragons, are able to search anyone at anytime and if they find something questionable, fine them on the spot and take the item in question. There are some magistrates but they only seem to be worse, handing out imprisonment or hard labor. At least the guards can only take a few coins, maybe some food. There are taxes, which seem to be high, one of the few things you can agree with the nobles.
Cormyr used to be the kingdom where guards treated everyone the same. No one was above the law and the king enforced it. Or so supporters of the king claimed. Now, a few coins can turn a patrol away for a while or turn their heads in a new direction. Nobles couldn’t do whatever they wanted but they have been able to do more and more in the past few years. It seems as if Tymora (goddess of luck and adventurers) has turned from the city.
Suzail is the capital of Cormyr. It is to the south on the Lake of the Dragons. Marsember is another town on the lake as well. Arabel is the largest town in the north. There are more towns around and in the King’s Forest and the pass to the West. Tilverton used to be the most northern of the cities but was destroyed a few years ago. There are a lot of smaller villages and towns around the country.
Arabel is still recovering from the attack on the town many years ago. There are a lot of burned out buildings that still haven’t been torn down or replaced. One small section seems abandoned. Meanwhile, the areas the nobles owned are already back as they were before or better.
