Campaign Timeline 

 

This is my crude timeline for the new continent.  I wanted to create something that had the possibility and promise of conflict but also followed the general "points of light" idea for 4E.  Overall, I am quite happy. 

 

There are quite a few gaps in this but I have enough of a sense of what happened to fill in the gaps when I need to.  The idea is that there is a mainland and this "new" continent was found about 80 years ago.  In that time, the five major powers sent colonization groups to the area and they have now settled in the area.  Recently, though, a huge number of refugees arrived from the mainland, as war has broken out there.  The refugees allow more conflict, as they are "old school" in terms of allegences and tradition.  Meanwhile, the new colonies have had many generations to start doing some things their own way and aren't sure about the refugees wanting things exactly the way they are on the mainland.  No real conflict has come of it yet but it is there. 

 

However, the group is not in the capital city, where most of the refugees are making problems.  They are out in the frontier towns, helping them with the goblin threat that has risen in the past year.

80 years ago

 

Archipelago found

 

North and sourth.  North was not as big or fertile.  South found first by monarchy and family that developed it.

 

75 years ago

 

New continent found

 

Only an area on the SE side of the continent is safe to land.  Other places too treacherous. 

 

 

 

Monarchy and oligarchy of mages first. 

 

Because of the angles, the monarchy got the area further to the west, and the mages the area around the bay. 

 

 

 

Theocracy and Empire show up

 

Coming from the top area, these two groups arrive.  Theocracy took the area on the bay and the empire went further north, by agreement with each other.

Goblin/kobold wars

 

Lots of skirmishes between the various groups and the tribes of goblins and kobolds in the area.  

 

For the most part, the tribes give up the land and retreat further inward.  There would be a few tribes or clans that refuse to do so and fight the invaders over the next fifty years.

Dragonkin arrive and go to area furthest west and still accessible to the sea

 

 

 

65 – 25 years ago

 

New areas founded and explored by the various groups

 

This is a time of expansion for all five of the groups.  Except for the mages and the theocracy, many of the groups get along and work together, especially against the goblins and kobolds.  Many ties are created between the groups at this time. 

 

Having said that, certainly politics come into play whenever the theocracy and the mages both want the same thing.  There is a lot of fighting between them.  Both sides tried to establish one more city between them and both attack and destroy it and then rebuild it. 

 

Dragonkin and Monarchy get along well, as does Monarchy and mages.  Theocracy and Empire get along as well.  These are due to geography.  Monarchy and Empire get along but others are either blocked (mages) or too far away to really do much.

Elves arrive

 

Elves arrive from mainland and love the forests.  They try and start an area for themselves.  They eventually create two areas, in forest between monarchy and mages and theocracy and empire. 

 

52 - 40 years ago

 

Dark Forest

 

The Empire, monarchy and theocracy all try and push into the woods to the SE of the mountains.  Several settlers are sent from each area.  However, all are destroyed.  Various attempts are made throughout the years but no settlement ever really makes it and none ever come back.

Elves and the Dark Forest

 

Elves try to go into the Forest as well but are no more successful than any of the other groups.  They don’t try as often as they don’t have as many.

Undead Arrive

 

Undead come and make a city upriver from the bay in the clearing.  Or, just one undead makes a tower and wants to be left alone.

Goblins and Kobolds retreat

 

The last skirmish between kobolds and goblins in numbers.  While small groups are encountered from time to time, nothing as big as it was.

Monarchy makes it to the mountains

 

This is the first time the mountains are reached and a settlement founded.  Metals and other resources are found in abundance here.  Many dwarves from the empire go to the settlement to help, renouncing their citizenship in the empire. 

 

However, the empire doesn’t mind and the monarchy welcomes them and it’s pretty peaceful.  Both see this as trading opportunity.

Dragonkin make it to the mountains and see the volcano

 

First sightings of dragons?  Seen as a sign for them. 

 

2 years ago Tension rises

The tension between the Monarchy and the Empire, who have gotten along well over the years, rises and border fighting continues. 

 

As the raids continue and get bolder and bigger, the fights get bigger and bigger as well.  Soon, the Empire and Monarchy are drawn into a fight.  Lines are starting to be drawn.  It's only a matter of time.

War comes to the mainland.

 

Huge numbers of refugees flee the mainland, go to the archipelagos, and then head to the new area.  This creates people who were just in the “homeland” areas coming to the people who have been in the new area for several generations.

 

Campaign year 1

 

Adventure starts in spring of this year, whatever year it is. 

 

Hired to clear a path from Glenmaple to Penburg.  Also hired to check on a village.  Go to the village and check on it.  Goblins attacking.  They manage to defeat the goblins and save a villager.  There is a feast that night for them. 

 

    Go into the forest and find many goblins tribes gathering together.  Find they are working with Banites and have a very powerful weapon at their disposal.  They don't seem to know how to work it, though, or it would have been used. 
   

Help more villages get to the safety of Glenmaple. 

Find the ruins of a temple that housed Dragonborn a long time ago.  Do find some treasure within but the two Dragonborn don't allow the bodies to be disturbed. 

   

Find more Dragonborn ruins on a trip up to Longmaple.  Infested with monsters (Gricks) so they can't search everything.  They do find some good treasure in a hidden room. 

See another village burning and go to help.  They see that a fey is helping the Banites in their plans. They also hear that the Banites are going to stir up the goblins to attack more villages. 

    Go to the south and find a consecrated area to Bane.  Fight the Banites and defeat them.  However, they see that a powerful ritual has been completed and is headed toward a city.  Figure out that is is headed toward Longmaple and so head toward there.
    Get to Longmaple six hours ahead of the "necromic bomb" and then find out there is a political mess in the city.  They have to appease four leaders to get the clerics they need for the ritual.  They managed to do so and stop the bomb.  They did have to stop some residual effects from the necrotic energy. 
   

They rest for a few days, make some magic items, fight in the arena (well, Sereck does) and take some time off.  They finally decide to go back to Grick lair.  On their way, they see movement and when they investigate, it is a Banite priest.  He turns out to be a bumbling fool and although he successfully calls forth the ghouls, he then bumbles several spells and doesn't do much else. 

 

They search and find what he was guarding, a hidden temple to Bane where initiation rituals are done.  They figure out part of one room but it is dangerous enough that they eventually leave, pledging to come back with priests to cleanse the area.
