Choices

June 28, 2012

After being blessed by the presence of Tekralus, we return to our respective dwellings.

We, at the Rude Rooster, are awakened by the scrape of chairs, some commotion, and cross words. We look out and find Ranis talking to a templar with a large press gang. Ranis gives them a few coins to get them to leave her patrons alone. They had apparently taken around 80 people up through mid-morning.

Zon and Vogal help Ranis a little and get a discount on their room and board while we rest up for three days.

During the three daysElendal is told, as Tekralus' pickpocket, to go out and come back with 5 pouches. Berry messed up his rolls and was seen, after getting 3 pouches. Jon uses chase cards and Elendal runs into a cluttered alleyway, goes up and over the clutter and runs into an agitated drunkard. He grabs the drunk's bottle and chucks it at his pursuer and goes into ectoplasmic form to slip past. He runs away and arrives at a blocked path. He chooses to leap over and finds a short cut around. The guards chasing him manage to keep on his heels and Elendal goes ectoplasmic again to get away. Unfortunately, he was paying too much attention to the guards and is forced to climb up and over a brick wall in his way. That allows him to get away from the guards and realized he still needs to get two more pouches and heads back into the crowds.

In a completely new area, he manages to easily pick two more pouches and check them out before taking them back to Tekralus. He finds some very strange things in the last pouch and some random things on the rest of them. He takes them back, as they are, to Tekralus, who seem somewhat pleased. He overheard the rest of the group talking, because Tekralus had given him a week to do it, and he accomplished it in 4 hours.

Vogal goes around asking about the scrolls he found and has trouble finding much. He finally found someone named Mobith who talks about a man he sees regularly to renew a protection spell. He's talking about Zattis. /Three days

We got a little sidetracked as players and discussed the purpose of being trained in specific skills. We finally decided that any trained skills grant a +2 to the skill check.

Back on track: We woke again and there's another press gang pushing Ranis for more protection money for her customers. She claims she already paid a couple days ago, but they are saying she has to pay again.

Zon grabs his weapons and starts walking downstairs. Vogal comes down behind him and Zon stands up for Ranis. He is told that these gentlemen were just wanting to talk. Zon says they look like slavers and the templar steps up and acts all authoritarian. He said that he won't be taking Zon, but he will take Vogal. Zon tells him that no one will be taken from here. He intimidates them a lot and they leave without taking anyone. Vogal then uses his power to get them to realize they won't get anyone from the Rude Rooster. She thanks Zon, but says he probably will have created more problems later. She's thankful, but resigned. She gives the two of them breakfast before starting the day.

Vahn is approached by Tekralus for another assassination. He describes a human gladiator which a noble is willing to pay to make an example of. The gladiator's name is So Bittah. He provides information on how to get into the arena area. We need to be at the commoner gate of the arena at high sun and see Hiedl. He's the guard that will let us in. She's described as a shaved-head human with a blonde braid. She wields two kamas. Tekralus is paying 150sp, half paid up front.

Vahn comes back to the Rude Rooster and sets a pouch of 50sp on the table. He says we have another contract. He tells the rest of us that a gladiator is to be killed. Vogal asks why she needs to be killed and Vahn just said that Tekralus ordered it. Elendal is not that crazy about the killing. He doesn't feel like he signed up for the assassinations.

Before we leave the area, Zon buys a healing fruit after intimidating the merchant into selling one for 24sp instead of 30sp.

We arrive at the gate to the arena and the guard, Heidl, sends the other guard away and escorts us into an area where she will be. She arrives about three minutes later. There is a wall between us and her, so she can't see us right away. She yells for us to fight her and shouts expletives. Round 1Vahn dives across the doorway while shooting a poisoned arrow. He uses the 10 min duration poison and hits.Vogal contacts her mind and reads her thoughts. They pretty much consists of tactics and survival concerns. He vocalized those tactics and she curses.Zon walks out confidently and approaches her to use his trikal as a bo staff. He hits her pretty hard. She attacks Zon with both kamas and misses, but slides between his legs and passed about 10 ft.Dro'van steps out and shoots her in the leg with his longbow.Elendal comes out into the room and held his attack. She offers to pay us if we help her get away.Round 2Elendal doesn't seem to like this and asks us to consider the offer. She manages to break through a wall into the hallway.Zon barrels through the same wall, grabs her and slams her up against the opposing wall. She drops one of her kamas, but cuts Zon's hand with the other one, forcing him to drop her.Vogal asks her why her patron wants her dead, then attacks the guard's mind.Dro'van runs through the hole with his sword.Round 3Dro'van hacks at her arm with his sword and does minimal damage.Elendal moves out into the hallway.Vahn keeps his readied action.Vogal attacks Heidl's mind and opens his mind. He is a wild talent and recognizes what happened. As she runs, Vahn's readied action goes off and he fires a poisoned arrow. She takes the hit and dies from the poison.Heidl draws his sword and yells about the mental attack.Zon gets in front of Elendal to protect the group, if he attacks.Round 4Vogal tries to ego whip him, but fails.Vahn threatens Vogal to stop, and shoots Vogal when he refuses to stop.Dro'van charges the guard and takes his feet out from under him, kind of.Elendal runs up to Vahn and punches him in the face for his attack.Heidl stumbles and runs past Dro'van to attack Zon. He's cut down by Dro'van and Zon bashes his had down on his way down.Battle End

Vahn returns to Tekralus and the rest of us return to the Rude Rooster. Tekralus is very disappointed and marks this as a failure for Vahn. He says that it took months for him to get a resource in the arena guards.

The rest of the group return, purturbed, to the inn and Ranis notices that everyone is not pleasant. They order food and alcohol and mope. Vahn stays away for a while and is approached by Tekralus. He asks how Elendal performed. Vahn explains that he refrained from combat and punched Vahn. He also asked about the half-giant, human and elf. He tells Vahn that he won't ask Vahn to kill the human, he'll have someone else kill him.

Dro'van walks over to Vogal and asks if he made the guard attack Zon. Vogal says that he makes people do things when he doesn't like them. Dro'van makes a point of saying that healing costs money and Zon wouldn't be happy about that. That's when they both hear boards creaking in the hallway. Dro'van draws his sword as two men break in from the hallway and one through the window.

Round 1Dro'van attacks with the metal sword he pulled off the guard. He killed both of the ones coming in from the hallway.Vogal cowers.Zon approaches the balcony overlooking the common room. He readies his trikal as a javelin waiting for bad guys coming out into the hallway.Elendal uses a full move to get up the stairs and realizes the situation is under control. The remaining assassin throws a poisoned dagger at Vogal and misses.Round 2Elendal throws his metal dagger and nails the remaining assassin.Dro'van attempts to run him through, but fails.Vogal tries to dominate and tell him to jump out the window. The assassin jumps out the window and breaks.Zon runs outside and sees the guy trying to crawling away. He throws his trikal and kills him.Battle ends

Zon roots through the assassins things, recovers Elendal's dagger and a pouch.

Ranis runs up to the room ready for battle and sighs. She realizes these are Tekralus' men and instructs everyone to dispose of the bodies around back in the refuse pit. We dismember them and dispose of them. She also recommends that everyone, except Zon, go down into the "sewers" and take the remains further down to a different area.

Ranis tells Zon to take some clean clothes to the guys as they get out of the sewers. They shouldn't come back in with bloody clothes. Ranis suggests maybe everyone might want to lay low for a while.

Dro'van suggests taking over Zattis' and Zettis' house. They think that Zon should stay at the inn and the rest will hide for a while. They also aren't crazy about letting Vahn know where they are, because they aren't sure what Vahn's reaction will be.

About the time Vahn was going to leave the theatre, Tekralus calls everyone into the theatre and motions Vahn forward. He explains that Elendal and the rest of the group doesn't seem to like the hospitality, but Vahn is allowed to get in on the 300sp bounty on the rest of the group. There are several people in attendance that appear to be in for this bounty. If the bounty is claimed within a day the bounty is doubled. A bunch of people start leaving right away.

By the time Vahn arrives, there is already a group there. Zon has noticed that they are watching a him a lot. He talks to Ranis and she suggests that he meets up with the group. He doesn't know where they are so she says not to leave the building then. Not even to go to the bathroom. Vahn comes in and he comes over to Ranis and Zon. He informs Ranis that there is a hit out on the group now.

As Vahn heads towards the Z's house, as the only idea he has, he's followed. He leads them into the elven black market and talks to the leader of the following groups. He nicks the guy with an unpoisoned dagger and told him that he has 10 minutes. He then takes circituitous route to lose them before he heads back to the Z's house.

Ranis asks Zon for help bringing out some wine. While in the back room, she tells Zon that he needs to go to his friends. Zon is confused because he thinks she needs his help now and he doesn't know where they are. She convinces him that his friends need him more and he needs to get his stuff and leave. He finally, sorrowfully, leaves and walks back to the elven market/merchant district where they originally had the package delivery. He doesn't really know where he's going, but he's trying to think of places they've been. He notices that some of the guys in the inn are around. The guys follow him around but eventually give up, thinking he doesn't know where he's going either.

Dro'van, Vogal, and Elendal realize they really don't have the supplies to stay here, and Dro'van goes out to get supplies. He happens to notice Vahn, but notices that he's being followed. Zon doesn't seem to be in any trouble, so he moves on and gets some supplies in the elven market.

Vahn arrives at the house and Dro'van meets him at the door. There is a small discussion about intentions and lets him in. He passes 20sp each as the cut of the job.

Zon knocks on the back door during this discussion and they finally let him in.

Vogal suggests that maybe getting a templar and convince him that the scrolls he has is evidence that the theatre is harboring a mage.

Zon has a puny mean and  has to sleep in the fetal position in a room. Very uncomfortable, but he manages to sleep ok.

In the morning Vogal gives one of the scrolls and the smokey quartz bowl to Vahn to provide as evidence to a templar. He's to tell them that there is a mage at the theatre.

Zammus, a templar of the guards, would be a good templar for Vahn to have told. He went to a woman named Mavis, a tax-collector templar. Outlined his story with skittish behavior and provides the scroll. She says he took a big chance and the two of them go to see Zammus. He asks Vahn to outline a drawing of the theatre and answer some questions. Vahn makes it seem that Tekralus may be the mage in question. Zammus grabs 40 guards and templars and heads to the theatre. Vahn is to stay while they investigate this.

After they leave, Vahn goes to the window, applies some poison to an arrow and shoves it into his shoulder. He acts like they know he's there and they just shot him. The guards make a little commotion about this but he manages to get the guards out of the room and jumps out the window. He makes the escape look like an abduction and takes a circuitious route back to the Z's house.

By the time Dro'van gets to the theatre, to check things out, the theatre is burning. It turns out that the templars rescued Zattis and a large number of people have been taken off to the ziggurat as slaves. Apparently, they consider this to be a big enough crime that they will be raising all the dead bad guys to ensure they serve their sentence.

We get 1296 xp.

Drew: Last time I let you hold my sword, you gave it away.
